The latest advice from Whatcom, Washington, says that it is not yet certain whether J. J. Weisenburger, formerly of this city, and candidate on the Republican ticket for the Superior Judgeship of Whatcom and two other counties, is elected or not. His district went largely Republican, but the railroads and other corporations threw their influence and money against him and in favor of his Democratic opponent. On the 6th instant the Garibaldi Consolidated ‘Gold Mining Company started ‘up five ‘stamps of their mill. just a short distance from the Glidden mine. The principal owners reside in Sierra City. R, Castagna, the general merchandise dealer, is general manager of themine. Mr. Castagna, who is well known as one of our most enterprising business men, took hold of the mine but a few months ago, a! which time it was only “what you might call a good prospect. He agreed to furnish all necessary supplies and to develop the mine and erect a ten stamp mill, he to be refunded the cost of such when the gold was taken out of the mine. This proposition the rest of the owners readily agreed to. Mr. Castugna pubabout fifteen men to work and began the erection of the mill and development of the mine 'mmediately. ‘It iooks now as though it isnot at all unlikely that-he will get every cent back which he ventured in the scheme; and it is very probable. that the enterprising gentleman will be rewarded by a good many dollurs more, anhis share of dividends. He seemed almost infallible, and his quiet modest methods and his well-kept secret was as much a mystery as himself. After his departure about a year later Mr, Joy determined to fathom tho secret, and copying all the prescriptions he had filled for the erratic doctor he began a systematic analysis, Ih his exam’ ination he discovered ranning all through the prescripiions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiatea blood and st bh disorders a coup! of vegetable extracts indigenous to California, so simple and so well known under homely every day na mes to every school boy as to en tirely dissipate the guspicion thet they were GRASS VALLEY. Enteresting Tests as te the Reeping Qualities of Baking Powder. eat One of the most important qualities of. a perfect baking powder is that of retaining its strength for a length of time inany climate and in all conditions ofthe atmosphere, Ithras been found by both practical and chemical tests that most of the baking powders, although they may possess a considerable amount of strength when first made, lose their leavening power, and become worthless, when a few weeks old. As is well known the leavening gas of a baking powder is ‘produced by the action of an acid upon an alkali, and this action is brought about through the influence of moisture. When, therefore, through imperfect process of manufacture, the water, which is always present in the ingre. dietits from which they are compounded, is permitted to remain in the finished baking powders, it causes the action of their elements to set in at once, so that when the baking powgers come to be used they are found to have largely lost their leavening power. : ; As the housekeeper has no means of kuowing, when buying baking powder from the shelf of the grocer, how long it has been made and its consequent strength, the tests made by Government chemists, showing the difference in strength between the same brands when fresh and when old are important. The chemists found that while the ‘Royal’? baking powder suffered no deterioration from age, all the othérs when a few months old had lest from ten to eighty per cent of their original leavening strength, Old baking: powdersgathered up from dealers in the East,. where they have been found unsalable, have recently been shipped in. large quantities to the Pacific Coast. These goods from age and the moisture in-their ingredients have lost a large” part of their leavening gas. The © grocers make a large profit upon them, but they are not economical or satisfactory to, use, because of their deficient strength.
The Royal Baking Powder is of the very highest leavening power, and always uniform in its work. One of its great merits is its infallible keeping quality, which is due to the care used in its manufacture. . All its ingredients, being first determined absolutely pure, are thoroughly dried, coated, prepared and combined so that nothing but the application of water or the heat of cooking will cause them to act upon each other or liberate their leavening gasses, For this reason the “Royal,” when used after having been kept in any climate for any length of time, will always produce the same superior and effective results. “No other baking powder possesses this great quality, ‘ Getting Out More Ore. A. Davis, who are tributing together atthe Gold Tunnel mine, realized $46 a ton from their last clean-up. They are taking out more quartz and will have another crushing before long. ————E———s — ~ + Very Umbecoming. Lovely tints inthe wrong place are reft of theircharm, A lemon colored countenance—the peculiar endowment! of our pig-tailed brethern who “hit the pipe’’—is unbecoming. It Buggests bile going astray,-and—the ‘infer. ence-is correct, Pain beneath the ‘ribs and shoulder blades, constipation, aches supplement this indication of the billious. For liver complaint and Stomach Bitters is an infallible specific. It relaxes the bowels Pufficiently but without griping or violence. To the secretion of bile it gives a due impulse, but banishes an excess of that saffron colored principle from the blood. Sick headaches, sourness of breath and fur upon the tongue disappear when itis used. It renews digestion, fortifies the system against miularia, counteracts a rheumatis tendency, and reme@ies inaction of the kidneys. er ae Doing Some Fine Work. C.
