James Colley’s residence at the corner of Nevada and Water streets was the scene of a very happy assemblage last evening. The occasion was the wedding of Mrs. Colley’s niece, Miss Hallie Grace Critchet, and Clarence V. Organ. ‘The ceremony was performed by Rev, J. T. Murrish of the M. E. Church, and the attending couple were Miss Maggie; sister to the bridegroom, and Richard J. Tremaine. ~-‘*fhe~ guests -were” with few exceptions limited to the relations of the bride and groom. The floral ornamentations of the interior of the house were uwumerous and tasty, and all the appointments of the affair were elegant. Mr. and Mrs. Organ, who are among Nevada City’s best-liked young people, will continue to reside here. The TRANSCRIPT wishes them uninterrupted health, happiness and prosperity. SSUES + Se + The Federal Loan, The Federal Loan quartz mine, in Willow Valley district, about two miles and a half from Nevada City, is looking unusually well. They are still sinking, and where they are working now they have a six-foot ledge. The rock, good and bad, is all crushed as taken out and it averages a little over $11 per ton, If only the good ore were taken out and crushed it would give an average of $30 per ton, The company have a lot of sulphurets, which run from $80 to $90 per ton, The ten-stamp mill is kept running night and day, Sundays included. The Federal Loan is proving to be a big property, and is another instance of what pluck and perseverance will do in opening up a mine. + e@e + Don’r commit suicide on account of your incurable” blood disease. ‘Ihe sensible thing for you to do it is to take Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, If that fails, why, then—keep on trying, and it will not fail. The merry go-round drew a larger andience Saturday evening than was ever seen at a circus here, and that is saying a great deal. Over 1,500 tickets for rides were sold, and in addition to ‘that there were several hundred people looking en, making the tetal number-who visited the Boulderstreet attraction aggregate about “2,000. This detracted greatly from the number of people usually seen on the principal streets and in the steres on Saturday evening. The proprietor stated that he would leave here today for the lower part of the State, whereat many merchants will rejoice, On Broad street, while the new band was playing, there were several hundred people out listening to the fine musiv, During the early part of the evening, before the merry-go-round panic struck the crowd, the merchants did a thriving business and took ‘in large amounts of money from their regular monthly customers. The new band played for several hours on the streets Saturday evening and the music “was highly-appreciated. Seme of the tnnes were old popular airs, and that was what seemed to please’ the people, Thé'bilk of the $25,000 which was paid out by four imining companies on Saturday afterneon and evening was scattered pretty generally over the town in payment of monthly bills and extras, One merchant informed the TRANSCRIPT that five of his customers whom he had carried for over a year, made their last payments on old accounts on Saturday evening. The miners around here who were ‘out of work so Jong, now that they have steady work; are on velvet once more, There was not a dispute of any kind on the streets Saturday and not an arrest was made for any offense, One thing canbe truthfully said of the Nevada City saloon keepers, and that is they will net allow any disorderly conduct carried on in their places. The very moment they see the least intimation of a probable row they squelch it before it_gets a good btart, wong There are no public gambling ‘ games carried_on in this city,-se these-whe-will play are compelled to do it in private, and that is the Nevada City style just now. James J. Hanley was the fortunate young man at James Cairns’ harness. club on Satrday evening: ~Hé dréw the new arness. There was not a drunken man seen on the streets Saturday evening, notwithstanding there were lots-of--people-in-and-aroundthe saloons, Sp ee ee Ir you wish to secure a certain and speedy result, when using Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, be careful in observing the rules of health, or the benefit may be retarded. Mr. E. D. Cheney, collector for the Original Union Soap Co,, and San Francisco Art Co., is here for the purpose of filling the ee eRe _ Bold Burglars. At Oakland Saturday the residence of Mrs. Carlotta Shermer, mother of Mrs. A. Isoard of this city, was entered in broad daylight by two masked men, They placed a pistol to her breast and said: ‘Give us your money or we'll kill you.” Mrs. Shermer is about seventy years of age and is known to be quite wealthy. Since the death of her husband some years ago she has lived alone. ‘The men entered the house at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, during the temporary absence of the aged servant. After binding and gagging the old lady they ransacked the house, and in a trunk found $270, which Mrs. Shermer had put away for the payment of her taxes. It is thonght that the burglars spent the night before in the cellar, waiting for a good opportunity to do the job, — —++8e + The New Band, The brass band lately organized in this city made its first appearance Saturday evening. Several of the members are employed at the Champion mine, and as a compliment to Foreman Tredennick the band went te his house and tendered him a serenade, With a little more practice together the band will be the best we have ever had here. ~-@ ‘A Solid Fact. i Post : The Miners’ Convention will give an impetus to mining that should have beneficial results for the State. The. industry has been allowed to languish, but with the knowledge that there is as much gold in the rocks and hills of the Coast as ~has been turned up, the peeple who are out of employment might be induced to take pick and shovel and stir up the wealth that is awaiting an owner. Helped Carry the Dead Robbers up the Steep Yuba Hill. R. M, Van dean, a former resident of this city, who is stopping here now, showed us today a relic of old times in the shape of a receipt. The receipt reads as follows : “Received of William C. Stiles five dollars for assisting in carrying dead bodies of robbers up the Yuba hill. “ May-23, 1866.” The following names are signed to it: James Jones, R. B. Gentry, A. W. Potter, George Dowd, W. H. Colley, George R. Crawford, R. M. Van Loan, C. W. Cornell, Alex Gault, E. F. Bean, James Lee, H: C. Mills, Oscar Palmer, T. C. Lampe. The above named men constituted a portion of the Sheriff’s posse that went out from this city in search of the three highwaymen who robbed the San Juan stage a few miles from this place. The late Steve Venard was‘also a member of the posse and tracked the robbers to their retreat’ en Myers’ ravine, where with a Henry repeating rifle he shot and killed all three of them and recovered the stolen treasure. Dick Gentry was Sheriff at the time, and we believe the late W. C. Stiles was the Coroner. The place where the robbers were killed was in a rough, rocky ravine, near, the. South Yuba river, not over two or three miles from where the robbery was committed. In order to get the dead bodies up te the road they had to be carried a long distance, and it was for money paid for this service that the above receipt was
given. 4 _—S LOCAL ITEMS. Daily Transcript. A rich strike was made in the Mount George mine yesterday. Specimens of the quartz were brought to town today and shown to many: of. our citizens. The rock is filled With rich sulphurets and shows considerable free gold. The Mount George is located on Rush creek, about three miles west of this city. It is owned by Dr. W. C, Jones, John E. Carter of Grass Valley, Fred Zeitler of this city and others. The mine has been prospected for the past year or two, the indications met with encouraging the owners to keep on with the work. -Mining men regard this strike as a very important one, for the reason that the Rush creek section was fer.a long time regarded as a peor quartz ‘section. The results at the Mount George so far will tend to revive prospecting throughout that locality, as a number of ledges are known to exist there. ~The ledge at the Mount George is two and a half feet wide. eee a Tue Mactctan—Is theré any one in the audience who will loan me a hat for a few minutes ?
