Eprror Tranxscrrer—Your reporter having been called from the State Convention of the W. C. T. U. before the closing session, is indebted to a friend for the following notes: The convention was impressive by ite magnitude, 185° votes being cast for President. When Mra. Johnson was called‘in after her election the delegates received her with the Chautau“Qua “salute, standing. Mrs. Skelton, who does special work among the Germans, amused and interested all by her broken English, quaint gestures and expressive shrugs, but it was said of her that she was growing beautiful because of her thoughts of purity and usefulness. Dr. Carrie Young, at one time a resident of Nevada City, read a forcible paper. Mrs. Prof. Damon of Napa College present ed the subject of Viticulture. She said that vine lands formerly he!d at $600 per acre had materially depreciated in value on account of the phylloxera sweeping the Napa Valley. As she was entering the church a lady asked would she please tell her who was to be buried. She saw so many weariug white ribbons she thought it must be an important occasion. Mra. Damon.replied, ‘The liquor traffie ix about to be interred.” As the. soft twilight gathered in the church questions of intense interest were diacussed; but a firm and gentle President controlled debates and parliamentary rules were strictly observed. These conventions are schools for training women to think and speak, They are developing dor. Mant talent, broadening woman’s horizon and making more useful wives and mothers. Reporter. A Big Draw-Down. The contest in the Lord-Dunster case having abruptly ended, Sheriff Dunster on Wednesday, draw from the ~County* Treasury the sum of $5,250 due him for official services since the first Monday in January. The cois had been accumulating, no one havin: a right to get it while the fight was in progress. Mr. Lord had held and conducted the office up to July 22d. paying the salaries of his deputies out, of hisown pocket. Then Mr. Dunster by virtue of the Supreme Court’s re versal took the office*and has since then been obliged to furnish the money for deputy hire. Mr. Edwin W, Joy for many years and pow a prosperous druggist on the corner of Stockton and Market streets in San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling in wealth the medi. cine kings of the country, But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that he has struck it big, an Ezaminer repurter was * detailed to unearth the cause, and after much difficulty unraveled tho following storyIt seems that about seven years ago an English physician, a great student of botany, located in this city. His practice wes not « xter sive, and yet the few cases that camo to him attracted no little attention. Ilis suecess seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders, and vitiated blood, In fact his ability to cope with these common complaints was marvelous, He seemed almost infallible, and his quiet modest methods and his well-kept-secret was 86 much a mystery as himself. After his de parture about a year later Mr, Joy determined to fathom ‘the secret, and copying all the pres. criptions he had filled for the erratic doctor he began a systematic analysis, Ih his exam’ ination he discovered running all through the prescriptions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiatea blood and at b disord a pl of vegetable extracts indigenous to California, so simple and so well known under homely every day na mes to every school boy as to en tirely dissipate the suspicion that they were the active principles involved, 80 certain, however was Mr. Joy that he had discovered the secret, that he embodied the new elements in s preparation of Sarsaparills to disguise the taste, and put it before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparille. Immediately the same marvelous stories came back of its astonishing effects, and the mystery was solved, and the talk it has crested has algesdy caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour in daily from all over the coast, . ‘ and thus another California industry leaps inte A Great Inducement.Dr. J. Ten miners were added to the force today, The pipe-clay in the new perpenlicular shaft on the Loami Company’+ claim, one-fourth of a mile west of the old incline, was cut last night. [Union of Wednesday.} The illness of George Fletcher has ‘leveloped into pneumonia, but he wus better yesterday that on the previous day. Tue many friends of the invalid were pleased to learn’ of his improvement, The new granite blacksmith shop erected ip the railroad yard at the depot has been completed with the exception of the roof, which is now being put on, and putting in the doors and windows. The shop is a fine structure and nothing short of un earthquake would knock it down, I: affords ample room for the work that will be carried on. In addition to this structure preparations are being made to build a vew car house and machine shop, the foundation walls of which are partly laid. A visit to the western and southern sections of Nevada county will satisfy any one that the county fs improving, as ‘a great deal of the land is under fencing, and much in the way of new improvements are to be seen in the erection of new dwellings and barns, and in the clearing up of the land. Dunster for the possession of the office of Sheriff of this county. In the first trial Mr. Lord obtained judgment on the ground that the Roston Ravine ballots had been miscounted, giving Dunster a majority of 35 in that precinct and 75 in the county; whereas had they been properly county he (Lord) would have had a majority of 97in that precinct and 58 in the county. When the case had been closed inthe Superior Court defendant asked for a continuance in, order io introduce the evidence of the Boston Ravine voters. This Judge Walling refused. Dunster then appealed to the Supreme Court which reversed the Superior Court judgment on the ground that the failure to grant-the continuance asked was error. Hence the case was sent back for a new trial. After the first contest and before.the reversal of the case in the Supreme Court, Lord was indicted by the Grand Jury on the charge of altering -the ballots. His first trial resulted in a disagreement of the jury which stood ten for acquittal ‘and two for conviction, At the second trial it acquitted on the first ballot, only being absebt from the courtroom lorig enough to choose a foreman and secretary ‘and take the vote. These trials cost the county something like $12,000. The dismissal of the Lord-Dunater case now is by the following stipulution, each party paying his own costs : In the Snperior Court of the county f Nevada, State of California, George Lord, plaintiff, vs, George W. Dunster, tefendant. It ig hereby stipulated between counsel for respective parties ‘hat the ubove entitled action be and the same hereby is dismissed. F rep SeaR1s, Gorae L. Thus ends a long drawn out and bitter struggle for a $7,000-a-year and find-yourself office. Mr. Dunster is now Sheriff ‘‘de jure” and ‘‘de facto,”’ and there are none to dispute his right to ihe place. Mr. Lord has retired to private ‘life and will in the future devote himself to the management oi his extensive private business affairs at Grass Valley. Notwithstanding all the bitterness engendered by the con‘est, and the n.any comments by those, opposed to him, as to the merits of his case, it has never been charged that he did not prove himself an honest, faithful and efficient Sheriff ;and Mr. Dunster has so far during his occupancy of the position shown himself to be in every way a worthy successor to Mr. Lord. Both men have all through the strife which meant so much for them conducted themselves in a manly and dignified manner. Some Hinte Werth Every Town’s Consideration. : Each locality, remarks the Marysville Democrat, desires to advance the value of its property, to increase the number of its citizens, to add to the vote, and to have its name known far and near as a thrifty and enterprising community. The man who comes from a bright and wide-awake business center is always proud of the fact, and takes pains to let people know it. The resident of a slow and sleepy. town, where the word “boom” is unknown, is seldom as anxious to tell where he is from, and if he does so he does not feel proud of coming from that locality. It is the people of each town that give character to the place, ‘The Oroville Register tells how to boom in a.very practical manner; ; “If the residents of any small place in California want to increase the business outlook, to build up a reputation for their town, and to add to its populgtion, they must work together. Not all, but a few enterprising and wide awake men must be willing to) spend their money to help onthe town, ~They must pay to advertise it. They must pay to give it a reputation. They ‘must pay to have it written about in all the papers. They must send samples to its trade centers, Theymust get up meritorious exhibits. They must, in short, work for their town just as they would labor to enhance: their own business. To be sure their ultimate object is to increase their business and extend their trade, but they reach this by booming the own in which they live.” ‘THE FORTUNA.
