talk of an extra seasion of Congress
being called to meet in November. I
have most diligently endeavored to
find one single manin a position to
toknow who believes that an extra
session will be called, and have failed.
The law requires that the President
shall issue a proclamation calling an
an extra session of Congress thirty
days previous tothe date on which
Congress is called to meet, and it is
hardly probable that such a proclamation will now be issued, as only. two
weeks could thereby be gained. Besides, it is understood ,that every Republican Senator had agreed to vote
fora change in the Senate Rules as
soon as the regular session meets.
This agreement removed the necessityfor an extra session, as the majority
will, under the changed rules, be able
to crush any attempts of Democratic
obstruction that may be indulged in,

On the occasion of the last two excursion trains to Grass Valley, there

They seem to think a political meeting isa guarantee\for any kind of gross

M, C. Hogan, the Republican nominee for Sheriff, is gaining strength
every day. His manly address, his
straighforward bearing, his past record
as an efficer and a citizen, are winning for him not only the enthusiastic
support of the voters of his own party,
but many Democrats openly announce
+. that be is their choice. A careful
canvass of his own precinct, where he
has lived so many years, shows tliat
he will there receive from his neighbors the biggest majority of any. candidate on either ticket. One desper". ate method being resorted to to injure
his standing among citizens not personally familiar with his history,
which is as an open book, is the charge
that he was at one time an anti-mining spy.; The statement is as false as
it is malicions. The fact is that at
North San Juan in the latter part of
July, 1885, Mr. Hogan chastised a
slickens spy because of indignities the
the lattér heaped upon him. Hogan
was arrested and the time of trial set
by Judge Stetlar; but the complaining witness did not appear to testify
and the Justice dismissed for want of
prosecution. Public sentiment at North
San Juan upheld and indorsed Hogan,
but in the valleys, and especially by
the anti-miners of Marysville, he was
denounced and = threatened. The
Marysville Appeal said:
The affair is'a disgrace to the mining region, and is further evidence of
the lawlessness and desperate character of the hydraulic mining people.
The San Juan Times, the TRansoripr
and all the other papers of the wining
region endorsed Hogan’s act, saying
that. the spy was served right.
The Transcrrrt office has a file of
the San Juan Times giving a full account of the affair.
To further indicate ’ how utterly
baseless and mean the lies about
Hogan are, it need only be stated that
he has in North San Juan property
which would be worth $10,000 if the
hydraulic mines were running, but
under the present conditions he could
not get twenty per cent, of that amount
for it.
