A Young Lady’s Ambition.
Ethel. Halley, a. yonng lady whose
home is Red Bluff, arrived here this morn,

talent as a pianist, aud is now endeayoring toearna year’s scholarship in’ thie

and energy necessary to its accomplish™

subscriptions.
The Boston Shat Down.
Thomas Peard returned last night from
God's Country in Eureka township where
he has been superintending operations at
the Boston quartz mine. Work has been

”” Phe Side to Sleep On,
There's a brilliant voung vhysician in
Detroit who should have been a gfeat
American kymiorist. During the recent
hot weathe? a. patient who Kadn’t been
sleeping well applied to him for advice.
“What side should I sleep on, doctor?”
he inquired.
“In winter or summer?” asked the dootor, rubbing bis chin thoughtfully.
“What's that got to do with it?” exelaimed the patient balf angrily.
“A great deal,” responded the, doctor
mysteriously,
“T don’t see it.”
“Of course you don't,” said the doctor
imperturbably: “if you did yoda wouldn’t
be bere asking me about it.”
“Go ahead then,” and the patient settled
back resigned. y.
“Well,” continued the doctor, “in winter, when it is cold, you shou! sleepon the
inside; but in such weather as this you
should sleep on the outside in a hammock
witha draft all around it and a piece of ice
for_a pillow. «Two. dollars, please.” —Detroit Free Press.

Teacher— Meyer, supposing I buy 13 ells
of cloth, costing 1 11-12 thalers, for a pair
of pants, can you tell me how mu¢h IJ shall
have to vive for the cloth? ae
Meyer(with a soul above fractiogs)—Sir,
1% ells of cloth are not sufficient to make
youapairof pants. You will want two
ells. Then, take my advice and don’t go
and buy cloth at 1 11-12 thalers, but something a little better fortwo thalers, That
will make it exactly two thalers.—Buntes

off the trammels of disease is, of course,
the legitimate method of wmedicativn.
This methoil is, unfortunately, too often
diverged from and ‘help perverted into
coercion. Drastic, excessive purging is
undoubtedly the most frequent form of
coercion of this sort. The bowels are
forced, literally wrenched into action.
Of course this is accompanied wich much
griping pain, and succeeded by exhaustion, which leaves the organs cf evacuation if a state incompatible with subsequent regularity and activity. The last
state of that man or woman who uses
drastic cathartics for constipation is decidedly worse. than the first. Hostetter's
Stomach Bitters is the finest laxative in
existence, since it produces the needful
but no abnormal action, is progressive,
“not abrupt in operation; and strengthens
instead of wéikening the organs upon
which it acts. Use jit for malarial, kid-ney, rheumatic and dyspeptic ailments.
