_ good out of them? For any other purpose GHE ORANSGRIPT ‘MONDAY EVESING, ocr. 2, °93. The Hydraulic Men Believe the Time Is Ripe A OOLONY IN THE FOOTHILLS. Ayer Property of About 25,000 Acres in Yuba and Nevada Counties to be Utilized. Marysville Democrat: Many citzens of this county are aware that C. F. Ayer has bought feothill’ land to the amount of about 25,000 acres, and that a large majority of itis in this county within a distance of twenty miles of. this city. Nearly all of these purchases have been made within two years past, and at prices ranging from $12 to $25 an acre, according to locatien and improvements. The lands embrace some very good tracts for farming purposes, and, with addition of water to irrigate during two or.three months of the year, will produce fine creps of hay and cereals. The question of fruit growing has been thoroughly demonstrated, and ‘there are some splendid orchards producing without irrigation, ene in particular asfarup in the hills as the Pet Hill House, just over the west line of Nevada county. Mr. Ayer and his associates are from the New England States, and have plenty of means te handle a colony to advantage to make the investment profitable, and that is the object of investing money in the land. Mr. Ayer has spent the larger part of the time during the past year ‘in visiting other countries and studying the habits of different people with a view to obtaining,a desirable class of settlers who will, when once placed in possession of a smal} bome cause it to be impreved and become productive. Their . plan‘of operation in the sale ef tracts to actual settlers will be liberal and the terms such as the occupants can comply with and make a sufficient sun from the products to pay for theland. A man who buys twenty or forty acres will be required to pay only ixterest on the amount of purchase money during the first five years, the same being payable annually in advance. After the expira~ tion of the first five years the principal must be paid in equal payments each year during the next five years, #0 that the time allowed for the payments of the home is ten years. Of course these conditions can be changed © suit-the.-financi@l affairs. of men who, may have means and wish to pay one-half or the whole sum down. The company. will furish -water-from-their ditches at low rates . for the irrigation ef the lands sold at the same time will cause improvements . .to be made in the roads, and otherwise to enhance the value of the lands. The work of subdividing and arranging the lands for occupancy will be commenced early in 1894 and is believed that there will be one hundred families located on the lands by the close of the year, This will be followed up until the ’ entire lands have been put in possession of gentlemen who have invested money in these “foot hill lands will find it to their interest to encourage the building of the railroad, of which meation was made yesterday, LOCAL ITEMS. Of General Interest to the Readers of the Daily Transcript.” The trial of John McLaughlin will be commenced in the Superior Court temorrow. The Loyal Legion will bave a picnic at Ragon’s Grove on Wedneuday ‘hext. Henry Beckman will commence building a new house on the Grabs Valley road tomorrow. { Justice T. H. Carr has sentenced Ernest Damon to the Whittier State School for the balance of his minority. The Senior Class of the Athletic.Club will reorganize tonight for the Winter, with Prof. Charles Hartman as instrnctor. Today is Labor Day. In all other States this holiday is.the first Monday in September, but the Legislature of California fixed the date one month later. Outside of the Court House, bank and Postoffice the day was not ebserved here. It is really worth one’s while to witness the refined performance of Lew Johnsen’s Colored Minstrels at the Orpheum.—San Francisco Examiner. They appear here October 5th. ‘ The Downieville Messenger reports that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of John Clark, formerly of Sierra City, for ‘threats against life, he having pulled -his pistol and threatened to kill a man at Webber Lake the other day. The teachers in this part of the county left on the noon train today for Truckee to attend the Institute, which will be in ses— sion during the remainder of the week. We expect some of the school murms will go-afishing for husbands as well as the finy tribe. Stephen Maynard, Wm. Reynolds, and twe other expert miners, who were employed by the Narrow Gauge to repair the'the tunnel at You Bet crossing, were caved on Friday but none ef them were seriously injured. * Aneraof home improvement seems to have begun, and why not? A dollar invested in improving and beautifying the owners has ever invested. ‘By the way MINERS TO MEET. ., lo Push Their Demands na Chronicle: The Miners’ Convention which will assemble in Pioneer hall,.ip, this largely attended. Inall the mining counhydraulic mining has been at a standstill for some years past owing to the Sawyer decision. influential delegations from all the mining counties so,that an impressive shew of strength may be made to effect legislation in the mining interest. There is a renewed activity in gold mining just now owing to the depression in silver mining and the attitade of the administration toward the white metal. Therefore it is deemed & propitious time for the gold mining interests to make its wants known and to give notice to pelitical parties what is expected of them. Nevada county has led off with the appointment of 117 delegates. Placer, Sierra, Yuba, Plumas, El Dorado and Amador are expected to send proportionately strong delegations. There will also bean influential representation from Siskiyou, Trinity, Shasta, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, San Bernardino and Fresno. The hydraulic people think now is a good time to push legislation that will permit a revival of their branch .of mining. Some concessions have already been made to them, and‘the feeling that the anti-debris sentiment is not so pronounced and so virulent as has been im the past. By getting the sentiment of the mining ceunties crystallized in favor of vertain measures in advance . of the coming political campaign it is hoped to force the conventions oppesing parties to take sides and thus make a cencrete issue at the polls. The previous conventions hela by the miners have been unimportant compared to the one that is now getting ready bo assemble. The State Legislature has appropriated $250,000 to build dams to restrain the debris into the rivers, contingent upen the Federal Government appropriating a like sum‘for the same purpose. The convention will endeaver to shape matters so that the congressional nominees of both parties will be pledged to vete.and work to. obtain this auxilary appropriation, The Stewart mining bill is also te be thoroughly overhauled, as it is objectionable to tute will probably be drafted and presented for adoption. It is stated that the quantity of drift mining ground patentable under the provisions of Stewart’s bill is so small . that. it will net pay to run the long bedrock tunnel mecessary to open the claims. Another matter the convention will take up is the alleged perversion of the mining laws by rulings of the Interior Department. deainceWuitnes ihn th dn de Pesctgelly 2 ists. As will be seen politics will be gure to cut a figure in the deliberations of the convention, and for that reasen the politica) managers of both parties are watching the course. of events with considerable interest. One of the moves that the professional tions of political miners from San Francisco, Alameda and other bay counties attend the convention. Old stagers of both parties will figure in these delegations. They will al! sheut for hydraulic mining, but they will endeavor. to shape the proceedings and resolutions to suit their own political or partisan purposes. There will be a lot of faces familiar at political conventions to be seen among the delegates to the Miners’ Convention, If all signs are not at fault there is going te be a lively political tussle when the convention assembles. The real miners are beginning te understand that they are going to have a fight for supremacy with the steck board and political miners, who will gather in the interests of mining to make politics for the next campaign.
