A Few Indacements Which Nevada County
Offers to Settlers.
—
Daring the past few ‘weeks the Transcript has received about @ dozen letters
from as many different States asking for
the information herein contained, and to
save letter writing is the reason-for this
publication:
First--Large areas of fertile lands, seeured by Government patent, can be purchased at such reasonable figures that a few
hundred dollars is sufficient to pay fora
small farm.
Second—The. standard fruits grown in
this county are the finest of their varieties
grown in the world. . They are of « superior
flavor and have a firmness of texture that
gives them better shipping and keeping
qualities than those grown at lower alti
tudes, and they find a ready market at remunerative prices.
Third—The long summers permit of the
rotation of crops, and the raising of two and
even three different crops from the same
land in a single season. —
Fourth—There is a ready market for all
farm products at good prices.
Fifth—There are excellent means of transportation, the railway penetrating the central portion of the county.
Sixth—There is an abundance of timber.
Seventh—There is an inexhaustible supply.of pure water, both for irrigating and . domestic purposes.
Eighth—The temperature is mild, both
in summer and winter, and is not subject to

With this brief statement of facts, how__ever,.let. it be understood that we do not
claim for Nevada county that it is a paradise on earth; nor even the popular romance
of sub-tropical glories.
Nevada county lies a little north of the
central line of California, and: contains a
“population “of “about “25,000. Et extends . — ers. _
from the sumimit—of the —Sierra--Nevada
mountains, on the east line of the State,
westward a distance of seventy miles to the
Sacramento Valley. It is from twelve to
twenty miles wide. The altitude is from
two to three thousand feet along its central
portion and less than one thousand feet elevation in the western or valley region. The
line of the Central Pacific Railroad crosses
the easternboundary, and traverses the
southern portion of the county for many
miles. It then enters Placer county, following close “to the southern boundary of
Nevada county till near its western limit.
The Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad
connects with the Central Pacific at Colfax
and extends thence north to the central portion of the county, passing through Chicago
Park, Grass Valley, and terminating at

Nevada City—twenty-two miles from the
Central Pacific ‘Overland Railroad. The
central portions contain most of the rich
gold mines, including quartz, hydraulic and
placer mines together with the upper portion ef the Horticultural belt, while the
western or foothill region consists exclusively of agricultural and grazing lands.
The horticultural and agricultural section of
the county comprises. about 250,000 acres
of land, a large per centage of which is
adapted to cultivation. The topography of
the county is such as to give variety to the
products. We grow successfully in Nevada
county: Oranges, lemons, citrons, figs,
olives, Bartlett pears, apples, peaches, nectarines, apricete, plums, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, hazel nuts,
black walnuts, chestnuts, almonds, and
every kind of vegetable grown.
Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada
