FICE: CIRCULATES 18 A Valley View. Says the Sutter Farmer, one of the ‘most rabid of the anti-mining papers in the State: “The-Appeal says.in recent issue that the Grass Valley Union is hard to please. Though it knows that Colonel Markham has had experience in quartz mining, in which he was successful, it’ declares that he is Sagainst the miners,’ because he gave the hydraulickers no help during his term in*Congress. It seems odd that a paper published in a. quartz mining draulickers above those of the . quartz miners. The latter have certainly nothing. to gain by statements which rest upon the hydraulic method; We beg toremind the Union that the valley papers are careful not to €ast any discredit upon quartz mining, and always speak of that industry with respect and encouragement.”’ A Gentiemanly Candidate. The Downieville Messenger says: Said a gentlemen to us a few days after Col. Markham spoke,in Downieville, ‘‘I want to say toyoa that Mr. Markham made one of the nicest political speeches to which I ever listened, it was so gentle and he was so gentlemanly. Not a word of detraction of his opponent or of the opposing party.” Saidhe: “They told me he was no speaker. They didn’t know what they were talking about—he isan eloquent speaker. One such quiet speech as he made will go further towards winning men to him than any number where a ‘passion is torn to tatters.’ ’’ : Beautiful Pictures. In these times ten cents buys @ good deal of art and literature. For instance, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper this week embraces thirtytwo pages, including the last of the beautifully illustrated Texas editions. an illustrated fashion article, the attractive Wall; Street and Insurance articles, pages on the Nicaragua Canal, the convention of the Iron and Bteel Institute, etc. It is a great number. In the San Francisco Examiner’s census conago that the census returns would show California to contain a population of 1,203,748. The returns have now been officially announced and the correct figure is 1,204,002. We are frail creatures physically— the most robust among us. The unhealthy man or woman is in great measure incapable of benefit to society. If, for instance, biliousness, « trouble of frequence and often obsttinately resistant of ordinary medication obstructs the harmonious action of the liver and the bowels, the sufferer is sure tobe dyspeptic. The three disJ ordered conditions are sure to be confirmed by neglect. Under the impression that there is no hope for bim, an impression in all likelihood cor.firmed by the use of objectionable remedies, the sufferer is apt come neglectful, nay, even reckless, and that the sooner he is removed from the sphere of, human endeavor the better for -all parties concerned.
