A Visitor’s Remarks on Nevada
“ Ceunty’s Resources.
A number of the San Francisco
Chronicle staff who recently paid a
visit to this part of the State says:
Primarily the only resource of Nevada county that was considered
Worthy of attention was mining. The
Hirst mines were discovered away
back in 1849, at what was called
Badger Hill, close to the present
town of Grass Valley. _In that and
the subsequent year a great deal of
placer mining was done in the neighboring gulches, and in June, 1850,
the first quartz discovery was made
by aman named McKnight on Gold
Hill at Grass Valley. This was quickly followed by others, and quartz mining rapidly increased until at one
time some forty mills were running,
and the bullion output was very
large. Among the quartz mines
which have made this county famous
are the Idaho, the New York Hill, the
Empire, the Allison Ranch, the North
atar, the Providence, the Mepritant
and many others.
Garess Vuiley is the center of the
yuurtz development, but there are
diahy Mines in Other localities which
proutise well, and muny whieh oniy
ueed the uid of vapital to ve developed
into good paying properties.
Next in importance to the quartz
deposits are the gold-bearing yravel
beds, though ihe working of these
4.8 been almost eutirely abaudoned
by reason of the anti-debris agitation.
Inthe townships of Bridgeport, Bloumdelu, Eureka, Little York and Washing'on are extensive gravel deposits,
which bavé yielded millions of doilars and will undoubtedly — yield
millions more. ‘The vaiue of theee
. deposits can be appreciated from the
fact that they cover @ vast area, and
that us high as $300,000 has been
worked from a single acre of then.
tne lumber industry gomes next,
and will uiwars maintain a promiuent
puaition.’ Thatitis nos wo mnch io
prophesy w permanent future for this
Tes . industry, is apparent to any uuprejidiced observer wi o har been tiirongh
the mountains. ‘There it will be
found ‘that wherever the original
forest wasremoved by the pioneers a
second growth has sprung up, which
is even now of commercial value.
The writer has ‘uoted< thousands of
second-growth pines that were from
one to two feet in diameter, and thie
new growth is already being utilized
for mining timbers,’ firewood, etc.
Another notable fact is that the present growth is jar more dense than the
original one, and will stand reduction
of at least 50 per cent, inorder to a'low the best development of the rce
mainder,
It is estimated, that something like
50,000,000 feet of lumber annually are
. tarned out of the mills in the Truckee
basin, and still but little impression
has been made upon the vast. forests
which cover the mountains in that
direction .
Sister industries to the production
of lumber, because carried on in the
same locality, are. the ice business
and summer dairying. The mountains contain extensive valleys and
plateaus upon which there is always
a heavy growth of grass in the spring,
which lusts until late in the fall.
Dairymen who reside permanently in
{the valley have learned thi8.fact, and
during the summer ‘they take their
herds to these nutritious mountain
pastures and keep them there until the
fall. The butter made here 18 of a
superior quality and al ways commands
the highest price.
Horticulture is a resource which is
yearly attaining larger proportions and
will in time become a leading feature
of thecounty. The apples and pears
of Nevada have won a high and widely extended reputation wherever they
have been shipped, and large profits
have been secured by those who
have engaged intelligently inthe business. Grapes, peaches, prunes and
other fruits thrive in the hills, while
-. in the western-part of the county are
localities in which the ‘subtropical
fruits and nuts prosper. :;
A great deal of cultivation is done
without the aid ofirrigation, bit there
ig an abundanteupply of water in the
old. mining reservoirs and canals,
which is used by many in the production of alfalfa and other crops.
There are five reagrvoirs in the county,
with a tremendous combined capacity.
These are the North Bloomfield, 1,050,000,000 gallons; Milton, 650,000,000
gallons ;Eureka, 1,130,000,000 gallons ;
Omega pe Blue Tent, 300. 000,000
gallons. Thereare over 625 miles of
main canals connected with these
reservoirs, while the mileage of the
lateral ditches is something immense.
Thus it is seen that while irrigation
is not eesential, yet there are abundant
supplies of water available.
“A GROWL.”
Mx. Eprtorn: Although my taxes are

I feel that I have @ right to criticise thoag

Hence, sllow me space to enter my feeble

: [Union of Wednesday. .
The Sheriff's sale of the Original
Pittshurg mining property is pos: poned until the Ist of December.
Yesterday forenoon, as Charles
Smith, of Limekiln, was driving with
a load of lumber, on the road near
Gold Hill, one of the wheels of the
wagon’ struck a rock, andthe jerk
caused im to be thrown to the ground
from his seat, and the horses being
ieft without control started to run
away. They soon. collided with a
wood wagon belonging to Levi Davis,
which was upset, and three of Smith’s
horses were thrown down and more
or less braised, but the horses attached to the wood wagon escaped without
injury. Smith himself received a
sprained ankle by the fall, and his
wagon was badly wrecked.
[Tidings of Tuesday.
A messenger came to town this
aftergoon after a doctor, stating that
4aiman was seriously hurt at the W. Y.
0. D. mine. The messenger did not
xuow the name of the injured person
and it could not be learned at time
of our going to press.
T. J. Waggoner of Penn Valley was
in town to-day. He has nearly recovered from the effects of the accident he met with some time ago. His
vigorous constitution, sound health
and temperate habits, enabled him to
survive a fall that would have proved
fatal to many men.
Martin Tegier Killed.
Martin Tegler, who who has been of late
employed as a brakeman on the Central Pacific railroad, accidentally fell
from a box-car at Loomis Tuesday
night and was instantly killéd by
having his neck broken. The deceased tormerly worked on the Nevada
County Narrow Guage Railroad. Last
year he drove tean. awhile for L. Voss,
the lumber man. He wasa brother
of Charles Tegler, and had many
friends and ‘acquaintances at this city.
His parents live at Colfax where the
funeral will take: place.
The Werld Enriched.
The facilities of the present day for
the production of everything that will
conduce to the material welfare and
comfort of mankind are almost unlimited and-when Syrup of Figs was first
produced the world was enriched with
theonly remedy which is truly pleasantand refreshing to the taste and
prompt and‘ effectual to cleanse the
system gently inthe spring time or in

The Wey ms Made Clear.
One of the mnost +t serious obstacles to
success in the way of man is planted
right in the middle of the road to
health. How to restore and to maintain a regular habit of body and digés.
tion is too often a source of needless
and, uibappily, of vain inquiry. It is
not necessary to inveigh against drastic purgatives. _They who have used
them continuously know the consequence. A remedy which unites the
action of a regulating medicine for the,
bowels with that of a tonic both for
those organs, the liver and the stomach, is Hostetter’s. Stomach Bitters,
sanctioned by the best medical authority, and receiving daily the indorsement of our fellow countrymen. With
at hand, it is possible to dety those
changes of temperature productive of
constipation, as well as constitutional
attacks of biliousness, which beset
even people naturally healthy. Ma‘. laria, dyspepsia, rheumatism and
kidney troubles are remedied and
prevented by the Bitters.

A Laay Describes Her. Visit to
That Mining Region.
Eprtor.Transcrirt—I-never would
want to see any prettier-or more
busines: like town than the little mining town of Forbestown, Butte county—one of ‘the oldest settled towns in
California.
Forbe town is situated on a . knoll
surrounded by mountains, and the
men coming in and out of the mills and
the rorring and rumbling of the
stamps makes everything lively.
There are quite a iumber of saw and
quartz millsin the vicinity of this town,
but the two mills that attracted my
attention the most were those condacted by Mr. sae: and John Pattison.
They have a ee many men employed and are getting out lots of gold
and silver.
It has been said that fever and ague
are epidemic in Forbestown, but it is}
not so. There were one or two cases
there, but the two: gentlemen afflicted
came: from a town in Nevads cotinty
and had bfought the disease of that
place with them. I would not advise
anyone to try to find a place with any
better climate or better location than
Forbestowa. Goto Forbestown if you
want to cure fever and ague and have
a good time. The people there are
sociable, they have two large hotels,
one store, a postoffice. and a church
and a school, the latter being situated
on ahill which overldoks the town.
acquainted with the teacher—a fine
young gentleman who seemed to take
a great interest in the pupils. If the
pupils only take the advice and listen
to the instructions given then by their
worthy teacher, there will be no danger but what they will succeed in the
world. Ihave only one thing more to
say, that is if you shou'd ever have the
good luck to visit this town, don’t forget to take an afternoon off and go to
Brownsville and see the big hotels
there. — One Wao Went.
