A Mountain Editor’s Wrath.
yeThe Homer (Mono county) Index
‘gays: “Dr. Sinclair will have to suffer amputation of his leg. The yelping cur who wounded him should have
his leg shattered: by a bullet and be
subjected to all.the tortures that poor
‘Doe’ has endured. Then the miscreant should be surgeoned vo that hibreed can not be propagated. . Th:
man who waits till he gets drank, and

Druyk or sober he is a cowardly cur,

Advertising Rates.
An ‘exchange remarks: A siugle
page in the Century taken fer advertising purposes costs $500; in Harper’s
' $400; in other prominent mayazines,
from $850 down to $100. <A yearly advertisement in.the Chicago Tribune
‘costs $26,000; in the NewYork Tribune $29,554 for the lowest and_$85,050 for the highe t. rates; in the, New
York Herald $36,203 for the lowest
and $349,000 for the highest priced column. These figtres wil! doubtless be
of interest to those who invest five or
six dollars per month in their local
newspapers, and flatter themselvés
with the idea that they are liberal advertisers.

The Cranks Want It.
A baseball enthusiast has hit upon
the following novel idea as a feature
for the coming World’s Fair: ‘‘L:ta
big area of the heavens,’ says he, ‘‘by
means of gigantic flash lights reflected
from the earth, be marked offin the
manner of a baseball tield. Then let
the New York and Boston nines fight
their battles over again, and as each
run is made or ball thrown let the
track thereof be flashed up to the
heavens, along with a rocket photograph of the champions, by. a million
horse-power engine and light combined, and ‘thus 5,000,000 people may
witness the great gameevery day.?’

Ontario Mine Yield.
For the nine months ending September 30, 1889, the Ontario mine at

THE ‘SOUTHERN POLE, .
What We Know of Its Environments—A
Gigantic Wall of Ice.
The golden age of Antartic discovery arrived when Captain, afterward
Sir James, Ross was dispatched from
England in 1840 to fix the position of
the South magnetic pole and ary other
position he could.discover on the way
there. Before Ross eould reach the
scene of his labora other explorers,
English, French and American, were
busy forestalling him. Of these. the
first was the Englishman, Baileny,
who, sailing in. Enderby's ship, the
Eliza Scott, discovered in 1839 the
isiands which’ bear his name, and
which lie almost under the Antartic
Circle, and almost due south from New
Zealand. Balleny cou'd not land on
the islands, but he made sure of their
existence, and afterward, sailing far
to the westward, he saw many more
signs of land, and suspected the existence of much which he could not certainly vouch for. What Balleny thought
he saw’ was probably much what the
french expedition under Dumontd’ Urville actually did see in the following
year, several long lines of coast, which
might be joined to one-another, and
might even run on to join Enderby
Land in-the west, and if so might certainly be parts of the Antarctic Continent that D'Urville was’ anxious to
find. Not less anxiots was Wilkes,
the leader of the United States exploring expedition, who, only a month
after the Frenchman, arrived within a
degree or two of the Antarctic Ci:cle,
tothe south of New Zealand, and, after
seeing land where Balleny had certainly seen it before, began to fancy
that he saw it also where none had
seen it before,and “unfortunately,
where no one has seen it since. For
some’ days, indeed, Wilkes doubted
whether what he beheld were mountains or clouds, objects which his crew
watched “eagerly, to -see if with the
setting of the sun: they would change
their color. But after running westward along the edge of the pack for a
few days he made sure that he now
saw land, and somewhat inconsequently assumed it for certain that
what he had seen before was land
also. The discovery of an Antarctic
continent was announced as a certainty; a large land, with a barrier of
ice before it and a range of mountains
upon it was laid down on the
map;; and a copy of the map
was ‘handed by the rash but generows explorer to. Ross, who left
Tasmania in the autumn of the same
year to look for the magnetic. pole,
with the two ships Erebus and Terror,
which afterwards bore Sir John Franklin to his fate at the other end of the
world.Ross had :so little doubt that
ered already that he seems to have
been almost disappointed when his
way to the magnetic pole was barred

How He Skippea Out.
Says the Virginia City Enterprise:
‘*William Manroe; an old-timer Comstock miner, left Sunday evening for
South Africa. He made neither blow
nor blaster ‘about it, but just got up
and dusted, merely telling a few
personal friends on the day of his departure that he was going. Mr.
Munroe is known here as a square
and honorable man under all circumstances—one of those men who
~ wouldn’t eat, unless he had money to
pay for his meal.’’

A Pungent Criticism.
The editor of the San Louis’ Obispo,
Cal., Mirror isevidently nota lover of
poetry. He says: :
“The San Francisco: Bulletin and
Call believe in fostering home industry, especially in the poetry line.
Every Sunday several colomns of song
by amateurs appear in each of the
papers. Some of,the stuff is bad, but
most of it is——bad.”’

Herculean Strength
Continually on the strain, or overtaxed
at intervals, is far less desirable than
ordinary vigor perpetuated by rational
diet and exercise and abstention from
excess. Professional. pugilists ‘and
athletes rarely attain extreme old aye.
As ordinary vigor may be retained by
a wise regard for sanitary living, and
for the protection against disease which
timely and judicions medication affords, 80 also it may be lost through
prolonged sedentary labor, uninterrupted mental strain, and foolish euating and drinking, the chief and most
immediate sequence of all four being
dyspepsia. For this condition thus, or
offspring, -a failure of muscular and
nerve power, Hostetter’s Stomach
Bitters is tHe primest and most genial
of remedies. Net only indigestion but
loss of flesh, appetite and sleep are
remedied by it. Incipient’ malaria
and rheumatism are bunished, and
kidney, bowel and liver complaint removed by it: :

landing place on the main land, so
choked was every inlet with snow and
ice; only on asmall island were the
adventurers able’ to touch Antarctic
earth, a few men among thousands of
screaming and biting penguins. Fresh
mountains came constantly into view
as they: moved southward; at last one
in latitude 77 degrees, over which
what seemed a cloud of. snow
was blowing; but when they came
nearer they saw that the cloud was

Ross hoped to find a way to the westward, so as to reach the magnetic
pole by the back of the new land he
had found. But as they approached
they saw stretching from Cape Crozier
“as faras the eye could discern , to
the eastward’’ a “low, white line,”
the _ nature—of -which—they~didnot
understand till they came close
enough to see the truth with their
eyes. It was a wall of ive 150 feet
high, without break or slope, but one
glittering, perpendicular steep,
through which, as Ross said, one
might as easily pass as through the
cliffs of Dover. Along this gleaming
rampart Ross ran eastward’ for 250
1842, for 200 more without coming to
its end, on both of which occasions: he
reached the high latitude of 78 degrees. south, whieh has never since
been approached by any man.—Cassell’s Family Magazine.

—Here is a good recipe for washing
soap. The ingredients cost one dollar.
Ten pounds of hard soap cut in small
pieces, four ounces borax, three ounces
sulphate of soda; dissolve in five gallons.of soft water. When dissoived,
let itcool, then put it into a wooden
firkin or tub. This will make fifty
pounds of thick soap.--One pound will
-do a large washing. It is best to soak
the white clothes over night. The
soap must be dissolved in hot water
before using.
Brazilian Lamps.
This lamp must not only be seen to
be appreciated —it must also be
smelled. It consists of a shallow, iron
saucer with sides sloping inwards,
save at the point where the edge is
bent outward to form a lip or Spout. »
Over it is fastened in half-hoop shape
a flat piece of iron, like the handle of
a pail, by which it may be hung from
aniron spike driven into an adobe
wall. The wick is a coil of coarse
homespun or raw cotton, the end cf
whichis, lighted, or hangs over the
spout. By the light it gives one can
usually manage to see where it hangs
on the wa.!, and perhaps even to find
the location of one'sbed. When burning it.smokes unceasingly, and worse
_. than all, whether burning or not, its
odor is incessant, for the oil which
feeds the, flame is thick, black and
rancid oil as thatdfthe castor-bean
