An Idle and Disselute Character.
Telegraph: Marshal Pascoe on
Thursday evening arrested a young
man named Harris who lives on Hill’s
Flat. Harris has created ‘such araving appetite for liquor that he will
resort to stealing it, or to doing anything else, to obtain it, and all efforts
to reclaim him have failed. It wasat
the réquest of his widow mother and
his uncle that a charge of being idle
and dissolute was preferred against
him, with the hope that imprisonmeat in jail for a time will be productive of reformation. He was sentenced to thirty days in the county
jail. :
Sie Pulverizes It.
Says Saturday’s Auburn Argus:
“Judge J. M. Walling addressed a
very fair audience at Music Hall,
Thursday evening: The meeting was
presided over by H. H. Richmond with
Geo. Hurst, Dr. R. F. Rooney, J. B.
Patterson, W. 8. Graham, and H. W.
Nash as Vice Presidents. The Judge
delivered one of the most logical and
convincing speeches ever given im Auburn. Hetook the Democratic platform for a text, and literally reduced
ittopulp. The Judge has ether appointments in our county, ‘and is doing
excellent work.”’
‘True as Holy Writ.
The Railway andHotel Advertiser
of San Francisco says: _‘‘When the
seed of educational facilities sown by
Senator and Mrs. Stanford begin tu
blossom and bear fruit, the people oj
California will then appreciate the
. fact that our State produced and honored two of the greatest philanthropist:
of the nineteenth century in Senato:
and Mrs. Leland Stanford, the founders, builders and patrons of the
largest physical and mental educational institutions in the world.”
A Schooit Beard Appointment.
County Superintendent Tiffany har
appointed Charles E. Mulloy a member of the Board of Education of this
district, vice A. R. Wadsworth who
has removed toCelorado. Mr. Mulloy formerly served on the Board and
‘was a very efficient member.
Opening ond Closing the Polls.
The election law now in force says:
“The polls must be open at sunrise of
the thorning of the day of the election-and must bekept epen until five
o’clock on the’afternoon of the same
day, when the polls will be closed.”

to travel, as the approach on the Neyada side is not yet completed. There
is 2 fill to be made about 100 feet in

Sewing Machine.
The Tnanscrirt has within the past
two years offered many special premiuma to its subscribers, and of hundreds of people whe have availed themt& them not one case of dissati-factton
has yetarisen. In every instante the
subscriber has been more than delighted with the bargain secured.
The latest offering includes three
grades of the Chicago Singer Sewing
Machine, a perfect imitation of the
genuine Singer machiue and according
to the verdict of hundreds who have
used both as gudd.as the original for
all practical purposes. ;
Three numbers of: this admirable
piece of mechanism are advertised and
described on the second page of today’s paper, and full information is
given as to cost of freight to this city,
etc. The manufacturers also supply
other grades up toone with an elabororately ornamented and full-pearled
head on a full cabinet case, beautifully
finished with mouldings and elegant
French walnut veneers, gothic cover
with finely veneered panels,.and a
chest of drawers inside the case. ;
Any machine that is not satisfactory

money will be refunded .
If you are in need of or thinking of
buying a sewing machine, look into
the lRanscripr’s proposition before
paying a fancy price for one that is
certainly no bétter, perhaps.not as good
as the Chicago Singer.
