where he has been attending the Sov-)

conservative man of keen powers of
observation, and makes some suggestions worth being considered by the
citizens of this ‘county.
“Tf the average Nevada countyan
had as much faith in his own locality
and would blow his horn for it, as
people do in every other place you go
to,” says Mr. Lord, ‘we should have

comfort, atid every one-of us, who by
business or pleasure is compelled to
tramp up and down, or across. this
great country, will come back and tell
you the same story, just as J udge

pure, cold water and unrivaled natural
resources, and a score of other places
that “are booming with prosperity. ‘

DEAD LETTERS.
What Becomes of Mail That
Gees Wrong.
Postmaster Clarke of this_city has
received from headquarters a circular
which states that of the unclaimed and
undelivered mail matter received at
the Dead Letter Office during the past
fiscal year four hundred and fifty-one
thousand were letters misdirected, or
only partially addressed—that is, not
addressed to a postoffice, or, addressed
to a Postoffice without the State . being
given, or, add 1 to a Postoffice not
in the State named, etc.; etc.—while
twenty-four thousand were eatirely
blank, bearing no address whatever.
Amoug the latter were frequently
found the correspondence of business
men, of which a large portion contained inclosures of money, drafts, checks,
etc.
Ninety-eight thousand were letters
to domestic addresses ‘‘held for postage” together with letters, etc., addressed to Canada and Mexico, matter
to these countries being unmailable
except upon full prepayment of: postage. i :
One hundred and sixty five thoueand were letters mainly addressed to
persone in care of hotels. The guests
to whom the letters belonged having
departed without leaving their address,
or forwarding orders for their mail,
they were returned to the Postoffice
by the hotels and thence sent to the
Dead Letter Office.
3
Forty-two thousand were letters fictitiously addressed, and principally
correspondence relating to what is
known as ‘“‘green goods” or ‘‘sawduet”’
swindles, etc., many of them having
money with orders for the purchase of
these fraudulent goods. Parties engaged in’ these fraudulent and unilawfulenterprises invariably do so
under an assumed name, and when
he character and business ‘of such
persons is discovered by’ the postal
authorities, such matter addressed to.
them is declared ‘‘fictitious” and delivery withheld.
_ Eighty thousand were parcels of
merchandise, books, clothing, needlework, jewelry, etc., etc., many of
which were misdirected, while others
were without wrapper, having been
insecurely inclosed, and others from
maediatety.

Extra Liability te Malarial In— “tection.
Persons whose blood: is thin, digestion weak and liver sluggish, are extra-liable to the attacks of malarial
disease. The most trifling. exposure
may, under such conditions. infect a
system which if healthy, would resist the miasmatic taint. The only
way tosecure immunity from malaria
in localities where it is pre¥alent, is
to tone and regulate the system by improving weakened digestion, enriching
the blood, and giving a wholesome
impetus to billiary secretion. These
results are accomplished by nothing
so effectively as Hoastetter’s Stomach
