GOOD ADVICE
Given fo Merchants, Real Estato Owners and
Others.
San Francisco Report: The Report would
‘eall the attention of the merchants, real estate owners, and business people in general
f San Francisco, to the fact that on Monday, October 9th, some 500 delegates to the
annual convention of the California Miners’
Association will be in San Francisco. They
will come from nearly all the mining districts in Nevada, Placer, Sierra; Yuba, El
Dorado, Plumas, Amador, Siskiyou, Trinity,
Shasta, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa,
San Bernardino, _Fresno and other counties
where quartz and placer mining are leading
industries. They are representative men
of California in the highest sense of the
_word, The Report hopes that the citizens
ef San Francisco realize what these men
have done and are doing for the State and
the world at large. Not a month has passed
for many years that they have not sent at
least $1,000,000 in gold directly into San
Francisco, as is shown by thé records of the
U. 8. Mint and of the lecal refinery. Time
and again they have averted a business panic
with their steady stream-of gold. An East.
era man-of prominence, who lately arrived
here, said the other day: ‘‘Your gold mines
in California saved you from the financial
distress which fell upon the rest of the country. The world has found out that’ there
ean be no panic in California so long—as its
gold mines continue productive.”
These representative men from the mining counties ‘sustain our cities. give steadily
increasing employment to. labor,.. encourage
all industries and otherwise assist in the
rapid development of the resources of the.
State. They are coming here to take action
“apo mensiresfor farther reviving the gold. mining industry, which means more precperity for California. *
The ‘Report therefore asks what preparations are the merchants, bankers, real estate
owners and business men in general of this
city, making toward a due recognition of
the visit of these representative miners and
suitably entertaining them?

GOLD MINING aban
Restoration of Hydraulic Mining of Vat tw.
: portance.
The Real Estate Circular, published by
Thomas Magee, concludes an ably written
and interesting article on the revival of gold
mining in California, as follows:
““With the restoration of the gold methods
and the same prudence and intelligent* dis—
played in other kinds of business, gold mining is destined to become one of the most
important interests of the State. San Francisco once did an immense business with the
mines. ‘The city was the great distributing
point for the State. The mines were of immense value to this city, for a mining town
with a populatton of a thousand inhabitants
will buy as-much as.double this number “of
agriculturists. The miner produces nothing
but gold and with this he is always:ready to
pay for his goods. That the revival of gold
mining will be of great benefit to this city is
beyond a question. It gives work to the
unemployed, it swells the product of gold
and increases the trade with Sen. Francisco. : :
‘Another imporant stimulant to gold
mining is the passage of the Hydrualic Mining bill, by which hydraulic mines may be
operated under certain rules. Since hydraulic mining was suspended there has been a
loss of $95,000,000 to this State. The annua;
product ef gold in California is from $10,lic mines were in operation the annual eutput was from $18,000,000 to $20,000,000.
The total gold product of the United St: ates
for the last 100 years was $1,969,692,976.
In 43 years up to date Califernia produced
$1,200,000,000. Such startling fignres show
the importance of the guld mining industry
in this State.”

“Got the Best of the Bargain.
A good story comes from Bowman Dam,
This summer the managers of that artificial
lake have levied tribute upon all’ persons
who fished there. A party from the valleys,
inclaudiag in their number a minister of the
gospel, camped at the dam and were having
splendid fishing when a guardian of the big
pond waited. upon them and demanded pay
for the piscatorial privilege. The campers
were going to stop only a few days, and so
it was agreed that an assessment of $5
would be about right, With some reluctance the money was paid. Then those pecple from the valley, every mother’s son of
“them, headed by the preacher, got in and
fished fer all they were worth. The break
of day saw some of them at the water’s
edge luring the beauteous trout from out
the crystal depths, and when the twinkling
stars of early evening shone forth the persistent anglers were stillat it. They caught
fish from—sundown till breakfast, and
salted them down, and the stery goes that
after a five days’ cruise they started for
home with three or four hundred pounds of
fine trout. Rather cheap fish, that,

Bunker Hill Mines.
Telegraph: A force of 20 men is at work
breaking about ten tons of ore per day at
the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mines, and 15
men are to be added. These men working-under contract, ‘‘by which method,”
said F. W. Bradley, Superintendent of the
mine, in an intertiew with a local paper;
‘they are making satisfactory wages, and
’ at the same time getting out ore cheaper
than the company can.” It is only highgrade ore being mined, however. The
cempany still offers to pay miners $3 per
day and tramme?s and surfacemen $2.50,
but these wages have not yet been accepted.
The railroads have made reductions in freight
rates on ore shipped out of the Coeur d’ Alene,
but smelting charges have been increased.

Hon. J. H. Neff, President of the California Miners’ Asgociation, declines to be a
candidate for re-election. Our friend Jerry
Goodwin of You Bet is mentioned as a fit
person for the position. Jerry would fill
the office in a most creditable manner. He
is a practical miner of long experience and
thoroughly understands the mining situation. If his native modesty will permit him
to become a candidate, we believe he would
receive the office and that his selection
would give genéral satisfaction.
