Twelve commercial travelers were registered at the National Hotel last evena personal taxes and one-half of State and county taxes are now payable. The advertisement in another column gives particulars. At White Cloud Hill above the Central House bear tracks were seen in the stage ~ yoad this morning, p» and Captain F ——, “has put fresh bait on his trap:— Republican: The Tahoe Ice Co. has purchased 80 acres of land along the Truckee river just-above its works. Two Mackinac Stories. There are two funny characters in Mackinac worth, in view of everything else, the making of the trip to their bailiwick. One is an old button headed hack driver, who is so tantalized by the boys and wags of the place that -he is continually in a high state of irritability, but being Irish he has a sense of humor. He ought to-chargea quarter of a dollar for carting baggage from the boat landing up to the houses in the village, but the other day he exacted a dollar of a visitor to thé house of a native. The native hunted up the drayman and asked how he could dare to charge the visitor four times the right fee. “Well, sorr,” said the driver, “he axed mewhat was my name. ‘I told him it was Corrigan. ‘Well,’ says he, ‘Mr. Corrigan, what do you ask? ‘A dollar to you,’ says L. It is my rule to charge a quarter to all who call me Owen, me firsht name, but whin a man calls me Corrigan I charge a dollar. And, sorr, he called me Corrigan.” Then there is adarky with a subcellar voice, whose busi it is to-cap new arrivals and conduct them to the John Jacob Astor House. He stands on the wharf and, with the voice of a foghorn, delivers himself of this rigmarole oyer and over again while a crowd gathers to hear him: “Astor Housel Astor House! A painter had been commissioned to paint the image of asaint on the refectory.wall of a convent. The price stipulated was very low, but it was agreed that the painter should have his meals provided at the expense of the convent until the work was finished., But the only food supplied to the poor artist was bread, onions and water. The day for unveiling the fresco at length arrived. The friars stood around the artist, the curtain was removed.
