Republican: The Tahoe Ice Co. has
purchased 80 acres of land along the Truckee river just-above its works. The reported consideration is $10,000, which
shows that real estate along the river-is
valuable.
Alf. Tregidgo has commenced work on
what is knswn as the Parr claim, situated
between the W. Y. O. D. and Cassidy
claims in Grass Valley district. The
location is in itself sufficient to warrant
the belief that Mr. Tregidgo will soon
open another good mine.

Two Mackinac Stories.
There are two funny characters in Mackinac worth, in view of everything else, the
making of the trip to their bailiwick. One
is an old button headed hack driver, who
is so tantalized by the boys and wags of
the place that -he is continually in a high
state of irritability, but being Irish he has
a sense of humor. He ought to-chargea
quarter of a dollar for carting baggage
from the boat landing up to the houses in
the village, but the other day he exacted a
dollar of a visitor to thé house of a native.
The native hunted up the drayman and
asked how he could dare to charge the visitor four times the right fee.
“Well, sorr,” said the driver, “he axed

Corrigan. ‘Well,’ says he, ‘Mr. Corrigan,
what do you ask? ‘A dollar to you,’ says
L. It is my rule to charge a quarter to all
who call me Owen, me firsht name, but
whin a man calls me Corrigan I charge a
dollar. And, sorr, he called me Corrigan.”
Then there is adarky with a subcellar
voice, whose busi it is to-cap new
arrivals and conduct them to the John
Jacob Astor House. He stands on the
wharf and, with the voice of a foghorn, delivers himself of this rigmarole oyer and
over again while a crowd gathers to hear
him:
“Astor Housel Astor House! I well do
remember the old, familiar homestead.
That’s where the peopleall go. I don’t do

-Catarrh Can’t be Cured
With local appliances, as they cannot
reach the seat of the disease. Catarrh is
a blood or constitutional disease, and in
order’ to cure it you have to take internal
remedies. Hall’s Catarrh Cure is taken
internally, and acts directly on the blood
and mucous surfaces. Hall’s Catarrh
Cure is no quack medicine. It was prescribed by one of the best physicians in
this country for years, and is a regular
prescription. It is composed of the best
tovics known, combined with the best
blood purifiers, acting directly on the
mucous surfaces. The perfect combination of the two ingredients is what produces such wonderful results in curing
catargh. Send for testimonials free.

True to Life.
An Italian paper, [1 Carlino, recalls a
practical joke that appeals to our sympathy as well asto our sense of humor. A
painter had been commissioned to paint
the image of asaint on the refectory.wall
of a convent.
The price stipulated was very low, but
it was agreed that the painter should have
his meals provided at the expense of the
convent until the work was finished., But
the only food supplied to the poor artist
was bread, onions and water.
The day for unveiling the fresco at length
arrived. The friars stood around the artist, the curtain was removed. It was no
doubt a very fine picture, but the saint
bad his back turned toward the spectators.
“What does this mean?” shouted the indignant prior.
‘Padre, I was compelled to paint the pic
ture as you see it, for the saint could not
bear the smell of onions.” —Youth’s Companion.
A Provoking Woman.
He had married her for her money, and
their domestic life was not the most harmonious.
“] was sold when I married you,” he
said to her one day ina tone of disappointment.
“Possibly,” she re replied very quietly;
“possibly. I wouldn’t undertake to say;
but if you were, dear, you haven’t realized
any cash on the sale yet, have you?”
He picked up-his hat for answer, and
went out where he could take a long
breath.—Detroit Free Press.
