It extends from the summit of the Sierra Nevada mountains, on the east line of the State, westward a distance of seventy miles to the \ Saeramento Valley. It is from twelve to twenty miles wide. The altitude is from two to three thousand feet along its central portion and less than one thousand feet elejine-of-the-Central Pacific Railroad cresses the eastern boundary, and traverses the southern portion of the county for many ——— ———_anites. 1+ then enters Placer-county, ~fol~ lowing close to the southern boundary of Nevada county till near its western limit. The Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad connects with the Central Pacific at Colfax and extends thence north to the central portion of the county, passing through Chicago Park, Grass Valley, and terminating at Nevada City—twenty-two miles from the Central Pacific Overland Railroad.
