Death.ef That Popular Young
Commercial Traveler. —
Vinton states that Charles Brooks
died Tuesday night in Baker City, Oregon, and that his remains will be
brought here for burial.
Mr. Brooks was tbe traveling representative of the Giant Powder Company. He was a young gentleman of
marked intelligence and business ability, and his genial ways won many
friends for .him wherever he went.
Last winter he was illfor a longtime
at this city, and subsequent to his recovery he became engaged to Miss Bell
Miller, one of the most charming and
estimableaf Nevada City’s daughters.
The mother and a brother of the deceased are residents of San Francisco.
Charles Brooks was . about twentynine years of age at the time of bis

A Great Paper.
The Admission Day. number of the
San Francisco Examiner was a marvel of historical completeness and
typographical beauty. It contained
an entertaining epitome of the growth
of. California from the time of the exarliest settlement to the present, and
the illustrations were numerous and
_ Fealistic. Much space was devoted to
the Native Sons. That order has in
the Examiner a staunch friend and
helper, and the intelligent members
of the order appreciate the great paper’s efforts.
“a Névada City Celebration.
The Nevada City members of Hydraulic Parlor who could not go to San
Francisco had alocal Admission Day
celebration on ‘Tuesday evening.
Fantastically togged out and headed
by the band of Ourly Bear Cave No. 1
they marched up and down the principal business streets stirring up much
excitement and making their share
of noisé. The parade and the attendant display of fireworks were enjoyed
by hundreds of citizens,
Sons’ banquet was served afterward.
A Broken Arm.

Sheriff Holland, was playing circus

The Book Agent’s New Way.
Book agents follow the motto, ‘““When
everything else fails try curiosity,” and
it usually wins. An oid farmer south
of this city, who has thrown book
agents over the’ fence, allowed his curiosity to lead him down to the gate to
see a bicycle go by. Just as the young
gentleman came up to the gate somehe stopped to fix it. The old farmer
‘kindly offered his aid, and the wily
agent slipped a book into the victizh’s
hand to hold until the wheel was fixed.
The conversation turned from the bicycle to the book, and the former was
repaired about the time the old farmer
was ready to subscribe for two of the
scribed and the bicyclist out of hearing the old farmer scratched his head
in a rather dazed way wd said:
