Everything in this line sent from Nevada county was prepared for for table use, being preserved in sugar sirups, while. the. Sacramento: and Placer county displays which got away with the premiums are said to have been preserved in alcohol and brine, The committee making the awards consisted of two ladies from Sacramento county and one from Placer, . * the latter being a near relative of one of the Placer county winners. It is said further that as’ soon.as the fair was over the premium fruits and the stuff in which they had been pickled were thrown out by the owners who took home the empty jars. po ae dawbiab ieee Prior Conviction. The prosecution was conducted by E. W. Roberts, brother to the magistrate. A. B. Dibble and A. D. Mason defended. The prosecution claimed the alleged offense was a feélony, but the defense set up that it was a misdemeanor until such time as the Superior Judye should pronounce sentence. McCharles having pleaded guilty to battery in Grass Valley township for the same offense, the defense put in a plea of aqua convic, or prior conviction. This plea was sustained. and the defendant discharged. Temperance Lecturer Coming, Beginning on Monday evening next Col. It happened Tuesday afternoon at the Nevada State Fair, Reno, and the Gazetie thus tells about it: For the 2:27 trot: Victor, Sensation and Alpheus responded to the call of the judges ‘‘ Bring out your horses for the 2: 27 trot.” Great interest was manifested in it as Sensation is a Reno horse, and for the additional fact that Victor, the phenomenal trotter, who carried everything before him at Chico, Nevada City and Sacramento, was also a participant. Bat little time was lost in starting, Sensation having the pole. At the first turn Victor was in the lead with Sensation’s nose at the sulky’s wheel. At the half Victor broke badly and amid the cheers of the Reno horse’s friends Sensation forged to the front. Doherty. let. Victor out again and again, but each time the brown broke and Sensation came in winner by a length, in the remarkable time of 2: 234¢, Victor second and Alpheus just escaping being distanced. The second heat was also won by Sensation in as pretty a heat as was ever witnessed in Nevada. In the start Victor was in the lead by alength when the bell tapped togo, but before the quarter pole wasreached the grey was neck and neck with him. Another hundred yards and the Reno horse was a length in the lead. Victor then made a spurt, but the pace was too fast for him and he wentinto the air. He soon recovered and down the home stretch the two. horses .were almost abreast until the distance flag was reached wlien' Sensation unlimbered himself and came in under the wire a neck and a head ahead of the phenomenon; Alpheus a poor third. Time, 2.23%¢. ’ The third heat was a repetition of the preceding two, Sensation coming in winner by a head, amid the greatest enthusiasm, hats being thrown into the air, and the spectators cheering themselves hoarse. ihe horses got a good sturt, with Victor slightly in the lead. Atthe quarter pole, Doherty, the driver of Victor,, began to crowd Sensation, and despite the protests of Tomuniy Keating, the latter’s driver, continued to force him into the fence, and finally there was a_ collision. There was a rattle like a volley of musketry, and several spokes were seen to fly into the air:‘from Keatiny’s ‘sulky. This caused Sensation to break, but in a second the sturdy grey was on his feet, passed the ‘‘Phenom’’ like a flash, and led for the remainder ofthe course. Time, 2: 23!¢. When the time was announced the people gave cheer after cheer for Reno's favorite horse, the only ones not joining in the enthusiasm being those who had backed Victor on the strength of his recently acquired California reputation. The Grass Valley Bank. The San Francisco Bulletin of Tues* day says: ‘‘Lt is reported that the First National Bank of Grass Valley has voluntarily surrendered its 20years chirter, and that its business has been absorbed by the Citizens Bank of Nevada City. Thomas Findley Dies, at Georwetown of Acute Pneumonia. A telegram received here announces that Thomas Findley died early -yesterday morning of acute pneunionia at Georgetown, El Dorado county, where he has for many years past been engaged in superintending ditch and mining operations. The body will be buried at San Francisco, where the widow and six or seven children reside. Mrs. F.G. Beatty, whose husband is his nephew, left last evening for the Bay to attend the funeral. In the early fifties Mr. Findley drove a freighting team between this city and Sacramento. In about 1856 he opened a grocery store at Grass Valley, and afterwards conducted at the same town a private bank which failed in 1875. ; In 1859 he ‘was elected State Treasurer on the Democratic ticket and served one term. His satisiactory administ:ation earned for him the cognomen, ‘‘ Honest Tom. ’”’ In 1861 he was again a candidate for the same position on what was by its enemies called the ‘‘Secession Ticket. ”” He ran some 4,000 votes ahead of the ticket, but was nevertheless defeated. In 1869 and again in 1871 he was a candidate for the Democratic nomination of Governor. Both times was he defeated, his successful competitor on one occasion being Governor Haight who was afterwards elected. He was the original contractor for the building of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. . ,Upon the failure of the bank at Grass Valley, he removed ‘with his family to San Francisco. The foregoing sketch of his life is obtained from some of his old-time friends here who quote the dates from memory. He is very highly sp ken of by them, and sorrow at his death is. expressed here among his pioneer acquaintances whu. held him in high esteem. ; A CAMPAIGN LIE. How It Was Nailed—it Has No Local Application. « The enemies of Captain Geo. Hicks, our most prominent candidate for Sheriff, says a Tennessee exchange, maliciously assert that he is a Prohibitionist. ‘This is the blackest ‘and most uncalled for slander of the campaign. We have known the Captain for several years and have proof that he is not #Prohibitionist, and in proof of this assertion—which we do not m.ke without mature deliberation— we submnit the following facts: On the night of May 10th the Captain got so drunk over at Frazer’s Point that he had to be carried home in a wagon. The next day, in the presence of some of our most promineat citizens, he was seen to drink a@ cocktail. Four days later he got drunk at Miller’s Landing and fell into the river. This can not be succesfully “disputed, for the feat was witnessed by our county Judge and a number of ourmost prominent citizens. Since then the Captain has been a liberal drinker, and we dare any bluck-hearted scoundrel in this county to come forward and attempt a refutation of these facts. We do not object to open and manly opposition, but we despise the sneaking and underhanded way employed by certain disreputable politicians of this community. ; Hoop’s Sarsaparilla is peculiar in strength and economy—it is the only medicine of wh cli-can truly be said, ‘100 doses one dollar.” Try @ bottle and you will be convinced of its merit, \ ns Meep Cool. Grass Valley citizens are kicking up a fu:s because some of the members of the Board of Education appoint their relatives to teach in the public . schools of the town, it being alleged that said appointed relatives are not so well qualified for the position as are other applicants.

A Truckee Tou~h Abroad. ‘A Santa Cruz dispatch of Monday says: Len S. Taylor, of Truckee, who attempted to shoot James G. Stirling on the street here several weeks ago, claiming that Stirling was unduly intimate with his wife, appeared today in the village of Soquel, a few miles seuth of here, where his wife lived. Early this morning he broke into the house she lived in and caught her as she was trying to get out ot a window. He had choked ‘her black in the face and had a knife in his upraised hand, about to stab her, when a neighbor came in and struck Taylor almost senseless. ‘The man allowed Taylor to escape, but he was captured at Los . Gatos this afternoon, after crossing the mountains. He has threatened to kill his wife and children because they left him, they claiming that they did so on account of his brutality.
