STREET IMPROVEMENTS.
The Question of Macadamizing to be
Settled Thursday Night.
The most important business to come
up at next Thuraday evening's meeting of’
the Board of City Truatees is the question
of replacing the plaiking on the business
streets. with macadam or rock and gravel.
The majority of the property owners in
the part of the city most affected are
represented to be in favor of the change,
and but slight opposition comes to it
from any quarter. Estimates show that
the cost of macadamizing astreetis much
less than that of planking it, also that the
cost of keeping planked streets in repair
very largely exceeds that in the case of
other stweets. The disease-breeding capacities of the decaying planks, as wel
as their many other short-comings, have
heretofore been discussed at length and
are commonly admitted. The Trustees
seem to be ia favor of the change, as’ the
people are. If any property owners are
opposed to it they should not fail to go
before the Board Thursday evening and
let themselves be heard.

IMPORTANT STRIKE.
The Nevada City Mine Coming to the
Front in Fine Style.
One of the most important developments that has been made here in years
is that inthe Nevada City mine. . When
the present company came into possession of the property they concluded to
commence operations some distance from
the old workings, on account of the delay attending the pumping out of the old
shaft.’ They commenced operations in
a systematic manner, and the mine has
been worked without a very large expenditure of money outside of what -it
has yielded. They have a splendid looing ledge on the 300 level and the striking of the same ledge of a larger‘size and
richer in quality on the 400 has démonstrated that they have a very valuable
property outside of the old workings
which is known to contain an endless
quantity of good ore. Every indication
points to the fact that the ledge on the
much deeper no one can tell. Said a
conservative miner, who exathined the
mine on Saturday last, ‘Take my word
forit, there is enough fine ruck in sight
to keep the mill running for a long time,
and the strike on the 400-convinces me
that it is best indication that before many
months, if the work is pushed ahead, the
Nevada City mine will he the most proflieve his words will be verified.

Ruby gravel mine yesterday, gives the
Transorrer the full particulars of the
murder of John Colman, superintendent
of the mine, by John St. Pierre, the
watchman of the company’s property.
He says that on the afternoon of the killing St. Pierre was engaged in piling
wood. While doing this Colman came
‘up to him and the two engaged in a very.
loud and angry conversation. In the
evening while Colman was playing cards
at the’company’s boarding house with
some of the miners, St. Pierre came in,
and while watching the game Colman
said to him, ‘‘You better go out and watch
the flumes--that’s what you are paid to
do.” St. Pierre made no reply but went
out acting as if he had been grossly insulted. About five minttes afterwards
Colman,’ seemingly in an angry mood,
left the boarding-house to go home. As
soon as he got outside of the building the
ing between Colman and St. Pierre.
Having heard a great many previous rows
between the parties the miners as on former occasions paid no. attentidn to them.
After Colman and St. Pierre had quarreled for some. minutes’ three pistol shots
wereheard. Theminers then ran out to
the place where the shooting occurred and
found Colman lying on the ground but
did not see anything of St. Pierre. They
a visit to her daughter,’ Mrs. Fred. picked Colman up, and he. said, ‘St.
Pierre has killed me.” They took him
to his home and he expired a few minutrs thereafter, the above words being
the only ones he uttered after being shot.
All three of the shots took effect, one
going into his right side and corhing
out on the left side, the second one in his
left leg and the third one in his right arm.
Immediately after the shooting St. Pierre
went home, left his pistol, took his loaded
rifle and walked down the hill to Down1eville. On arriving there he employed
an attorney who told him to decline: saying anything about the affair, and to go
to the jail and surrender himself, notifying the officers that he had. shot a man at
the Ruby mine. St. Pierre followed the
instructions of his attorney. There were
no Witnesses to the shooting. It is said
that the continual brow-beating and overbearing language used by Colman nearly
set St. Pierre crazy, and in a moment o!
desperation he committed the deed.

“The Turkish Bath” at the Theater tonight, What’s in a name? There is nothing in the play to be been at the place
and time aforesaid that suggests the simmering domain of the sweat box, the
shower, the pvol or the horny-handed attendant who, clothed in the brief authority of a towel, rasps the hide from one’s
calf, or pokes his thumb into the pit of
the patient’s stomach. The evening is
passed in a sort of an informal way with
the Eckerts and Marie Heath, and the
others of a very efficient cast, in a lot of
delightful specialties and funny situations
brought about in the course of a sojourn
of a couple of flighty young ladies at the
weaside cottage of their uncle, a tizzpop
sort of an old gentleman whom they
greatly dote‘upon but contrive to remove
from the premises in order that they may
entertain a couple of amateur actors who
are staying at a neighboring cottage.
Marie Heath, the chief charmer of the
company, enacts a rambling role as the
old man’s daughter and introduces some
specialties that are original and clever.
Miss Heath is one of the moat remarkable
combinations of age and mfancy that
have been seen on the local stage. She
can do the part of a vivacious child with
an art that is absolutely perfect, her
voice, face and figure constituting a combination that cannot fail to excite wonder
with admiration, while bits of work’ that.
she throws in occasionally reveal the
knowledge and finish of an experienced
actress. .
T. W. Eckert was for many years the
reigning tenor at the Tivoli in San Francisco. Since his figure grew so unfortunately stout he has retired to lighter
roles, but he retains his magnificent
voice, and his’ young wife is much improved, evidently through the excellent
training of her husband.
The other ladies and gentleman . of the
troupe are very capable in their respective
lines, and “The Turkish Bath” will be
well worth seeing and: hearing for the
clean comedy and good music in it.

The Fruit Growers Association of Nevada
county has up to the present time, shipped nearly two car loads of Bartlett
pears, in all about 800 bexes, which have
gone to Chicago and other points, and are
sold on commission by Uook & Langley,
fruit merchants of that city. The Association does not purchase fruit, but
takes the fruit of its members or others,
to be sold on conimission, the grower taking his chances on the sales that may be
made at the East. For its service. in
packing and shipping the fruit the Association charges its members a commission of five per cent, er to non-members
ten percent. The Association is only
initiating its business this year, and al:
though prices have not been high in the
Eastern markets, the returns have been
fairly encouraging, and if the prices that
have recently ruled are maintained the
season’s shipment will be satisfactory.
The association ships in connection with
the. Colfax Association, when it is necessary to complete a carload, and by this
means their interests are mutual. It is
expected from this enterprise, which may
be said’ to have now been successfully
organized, that an early. movement will
he made to establish a fruit cannery as a
necessary acco npaniment to the fruit raising business, as it is evident to growers
that provision must be made for the can:

suitable for shipment, and to provide
against the waste of fruit, which is a
very serious loss each season.
