It will be seen that Wm. Loutzerheiser held 5 shares, E.G. Waite, present Secretary of State 10 shares, E. McLaughlin, now of San Jose 10 shares, . Charles Marsh of Nevada City 50 shares. On the 27th day ef June, 1861, the articles of Association of the Central Pacific Railroad. Company -were subscribed and sworn to by those of the directors. of that company, It is something of a historical curiosity at this time, says the Themis, The number of years that tie company shall continue is fifty. The capital stock was $8,500,000 in shares ef $100 each. The first nine Crocker, John Bailey, Theedore D. J udah, L, Booth, C. P, Huntingion, Mark Hopkins of Sacramento, D. W. Strong of Dutch Flat and Charles Marsh of Nevada. The five commissioners to open books of subscription to the steck were B. F. Moore, Dutch “Flat; Edward J. Brickell, Illincistown, E; G. Waite, Nevada City; E. MeLaughlin, Grass Valley; Samuel Cross, Sacramento, The Py original .subseribers-for—the stock’ ware: James Bailey, 150 shares; Mark Hopkins, 150 shares; Charles Marsh, 50 shares; Theodore D. McLaughlin, 10 shares; Wm. Loutzenheiser, 5 shares; Leland Stanford, 150 shares; Charles Crocker, 150 shares; _Samuel Cross, 10 shares,_It appears from ' the affidavit of Leland Stanford, Mark Hop kins and C. P. Huntington that the amount $1,000 for-every milo of the road had been subscribed, and that 10 per cent has been ‘already paidin. More than two-thirds of the men whe formed the great enterprise have passed from earthly existance, butnot befere the stupetiduus work had been completed. Very few of the original subscribers retained their stock. The Act of Congress authorizing the construction ef the Central Pacitic Railroad was approved J: uly 1, 1862. Within six years thereafter the last spike was driven.
