The Maine Election.
Maine held her State election Monday,
and gave about an average vote and Kepublican majority fora local contest. The
State ticket, two-thirds of the Legislature and all the ( ‘ongressional districts are
Republican. This was to be expected.
Since 1856 Maine has gone Republican
regularly by from about 8,000 to 30,000,
except in the State election of 1880, when
a fusion of Democrats and Greenbackers
carried the State by a plurality of 18).
There have also been from time to time
wo ne breaks in her Congressional ranks.
These are held solid now partly by the
thorough organization of the party and
partly by the character and ability ot the
delegation. “Reed has aroused some
antagonism in his district, and his plurality of 4,827 in 1890 has been cut down
eonsiderably, but his power and popularity are too great to permit his defeat.

-Catarrh
Originates in scrofulous taint in the blood,
Hence the proper method by which to cure
catarrh, is to purify the blood. Its many
disagreeable symptoms, and the danger of
developing into bronchitis or that terribly
fatal disease, consumption, are cutirely
removed by Ilood’s Sarsaparilla, which .
cures catarrh by purifying the blood and
also tones up the system and greatly improves the general health of those who
take it. Be sure to get

When the Trap is Sprung
Upon us, as it sometime is, in a most unexpected inanner by discase, we appreciate the fact that it is @ most insidious
foe. and that not only is it necessary to
combat it by the most potent medicinal
agencies, buf to prevent its manifestation atall by counteracting the causes
that produce it. Thus,-exposure in wet
weather, the enforced wearing of damp
clothes during a storm, .a thorough
draught, unaccustomed diet and water,
bodily or mental overwork, are breeders
of disease, hut Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters will prevent their isducing it. This
medicine fortities the system against the
assured effects such causes would otherwise produce. To the mariner, miner,
the outdoor laborer, the slave of the desk
and pen, and the overworked genérally,
it is of the utmost advantaye. Dyspepsia,
kidney trouble, malaria, biliousness, all
yield to. it.

POT THE LAND TO (THER USE.
Some Good Advice to Farmers Copied From
the Oroville Register.
The farmers who raiso a few head of
horses, sheep, cattle, hegs and fowls are
not the ynes who complain of hard times
and kick at the low-price of grain. The
fruit growers who dry or ship’ or sell to
canneries are making money. The land
owners who devote their soil to alfalfa
are doing fairly well. The men who do
almost arything in fact from growing
ramie and hops to broom co.n and beafis
are not the ones who are constantly
grumbling about dull years and. hard
times, but it is the man who plants his
farm to wheat or barley, aud buys his
beef, butter, poultry, lard, fruit and
vegetables. ‘Ihere is nc use to which a
man can put his land that pays him so
little in the long run as wheat raising.
It will pay him better to turn out his
horses, séll his machines and put his land
into pastures, He won’s handle ao much
money nor have so many debts to pay,
but at the end of five years he will have
a bigger bank account and a smaller
mortgage.
