FIRE AT. GLENBROOK.
Dastard'y Attempt to Destroy AN of the Buildings at the Park.
At an early hour this morning the directora’ offic@at the Park was discovered to be
on fire by the watchmen and stable men at
that place. When discovered the building
was enveloped in flames and burned -to the
ground,
When all of these men were areused they
found that fires had been set in different
places around the building.» Had it not
been for some hard and quick work on their
part the grand stand would have been totally
destroyed,
Tn a dozen different places fires had been
kindled@With pitch pine thoroughly soaked
with kerosene:
At the stables’ several fires were kindled
and the s@dundrel was succéssful in des
treying about twenty stables, from No. 43
to 63,
This is the most dastardly, affair that has
eccurred in this county in many years.
‘We learn that strong suspision rests upon
a party who will probably bearrested.
Lhe loss is probably inthe neighborhood
ef $800, which is fully eovered by insyrance,

Several new heuses have been erected recently, and now the question that is agitat-. °
ing the public mind is thia: Will there be
any house—warmings ?
One of our merchants informed us today that he had been in business for eleven

A great mapy quartz mines in Sierra

will be worked on an extensive scale. That
means more business for Nevada City,
Sierra county's prosperity is Nevada City’s
prosperity, this being the business center
fer that section.
Among the people generally there is a disposition to have the front of their premises,
on thestreet, present a clean appearance.
There is an exception to this rule, however.
Some people prefer dirt and filth, as is manifeated ina number of places around town,
The Sunset} Telephone Company is se~
verely censured by our people fornot complying with their contract. It is generally
believed that they put up the line between

opposition company. The way they have it
now arrange d is worse than no line at all.
Preparations for the new electric railroad
between this city and Marysville are prey

of this month something tangible will be
done in regard to the matter. Aswe have
stated a number of times—that road will be
built.
The Odin mine is looking splendid. Th ey

The gravel they are now taking out pays

working the channel is over one hundred feet wide on one side, and as far as
they can tell now is about seventy feet on
world but that the Odin in time will be one
of the very best gravel mines i this dis.

A young man who left Nevada City t wenty-five years ago returned on Monday last,
Up to yesterday hehad been trying to get
his bearings, and has net got them yet, for
he says Nevada City bears no resemblance
to that which seemed to be impressed upon
his mind before coming here. Ne wonder.
The town has improved’ so much and so
many changes have been made, except here
and there, that no one would recognize the
plave if they had been absent that length of
time,
A gentleman who arrived here yesterday
from San Francisco informs the Transcript

send one of their hest mining experts here the
last of this menth to examine two mines in
the Nevada City mining district, with a
view of purchasiug them, We do not know
what mines are referred to, but do hope the
expert's opinion will be favorable, for such
men as Floed and Mackey are very desirsble men to have in a mining county,
