That is, those who are cured by it, speak to friends afflicted similarly, who in turn derive benefit and urge others to try this successful medicine. . Thus the circle of its popularity is rapidly widening from this source alone, and more and more are becoming. enthusiastic in behalf of Hood’s Sarsaparilla as_it actually demonstrates its absolute merit. All that is asked for Hood’s Sarsaparilla is that it be given a fair trial. Ifyou need a yood blood purifier, or building up medicine, try The Washington Murder Case, Judge Wadsworth acting as deputy county coroner held an inquest Sun’ day on the remains of the late Peter Chappel who was buried that afternoon from the Congregafional Church. The jurors were Norval Douglass, E F. Rosenthal, G. E. Withington, N. Bailey, J. B. Jilbert, and, Howard L. Douglass. They found that deveased came to his death from a pistol wound inflicted by David Steele. The preliminary examination of: Steele is set for three o’clock Wednesday afternoon in Judge Wadsworth’scourt. It will at that time be postponed to a later date if the Hodge trial is not then concluded, : ‘Weak and weary’ describes the condition of many people debilitated by the warm weather, by disease or overwork. Wanimaker., Finding it impossible to return there the President telegraphed Mrs, Harrison and she came on to Washington. Saturday the first cabinet meeting for quite a while was held, All the cabinet were . present except Secretaries Blaine aad Rusk who are out of town. The extra session, lasting several hours, was given up tothe discussion of an extra s@ssion of Congress, and it was finally decided not to call an extra session. When the meeting opened the only outright opponents wf an extra session were Secretaries Windom and lracy, but they were so well fortified with vinanswerable arguments against the extra session that the decision was finally arrived at unapimously, It was generally expected that several other important ‘matters would be taken up at this meeting but owing to the unusual legnth of the session they were postponed. The Democrats appear to be disappointed hecause no extra_session of Congress has been called. They had been indulging in the hope of its being called and of some mistake being made by the Republicans that would change the unmistakeably favorable sentiment which the country entertains at present for the administration, Judge Houck the plain-spoken.Congressman from Tennessee and Civil Service Commissioner Lyman had a good-natured argument a day or two ago as to whether the Civil Service Commission should be abolished. Judge Houck took the affirmative and succeeded it easily demolishing every reason that Mr. Lyman could furnish for the existence of the Conimision. Judge will repeat his arguments upon
the floor of the House early in’ the next session, : A meaner or more underhanded and contemptible fight than that which is being waged aguinst Pension Commissioner Tanner has never been seen. Almost every crime which bitter malive can invent has been charged against him; no lie is too ridiculous for.those papers fighting him to print, Tum no apologist for Commissioner Tfanner—he needs none, He has vommitted errors, but they have been in every instance of the.heart and not the head. The only trouble with Tanner is that his heart is entirely too big to suit alot of close-fisted curmudgeons, who would like to see all the old soldiers turned out. to graze, instead of being pensioned from the o.erflowing treasury of the country kind of a man these fellows want at the head of the Pension office. They want a man who will pile many obstacles in the path of the poor applicant for a pension and give the wealthy Government instead of the poor applicant the benefit of every doubt which may arise in proving disubilityBat there is one consolation for the veterans the only man who has the power to remove ‘‘Corporal” Tanner is Benjamin Harrison and he is known to think pretty much as. Tanner does on the soldier question. Policeman Kearney, the man who arrested the agsaysin Guitegu as he wan running to a carriage after shooting President Garfield, died here last Friday. Whe Validity of Material Liens On Mining Property. The Tidings says of the opinién filed ollicg of the Clerk of the Suti the prome Court, for this district, Friday Mioon,-in the case of Sylvester, ! ide ¢& Johnston’ va, the Coe Quartz “Mining Co., appellant: This action was brought to foreclose their separate material—men’s liens on the mining claim of the defendantfor materials furnished for repairs on said claim, There was but one contract to do all the work for a certain number of shares of stock of the company and the contract was not recorded. The appellant contends that the statute does not. give to material men liens upon mining claims, but only upon each separate structure around the same, and upon this basis it is argued that the notices of the liens being against the mine and not the structures erected in repairing the same, they were invalid. The Court does not concur in this view. The lien givan by the statute is upon the mining claim as a whole and not upon the separate piece of work done in its repair. The judgment and order appealed from are affirmed except as to respondent Johnston, and as to him the lower Court is instructed to modify the judgment so as not to allow him pay for material that was not used. {The suit was brought against the lessee of the Coe, on account of materials and supplies furnished bim. Defendants contended that they had caused notices to be posted declaring that they would not be responsible for debts of any kind contracted for by the lessee, but in the trial of the case it was decided that the plaintiffs did not bave legal notice to that effect. Under the decision of the Superior Court the plaintiffs filed a lien against the property of the Company. The original amount of the claim was $739 40.) ; HARD CASE. John Fogarty Takes a Shot at His Son James. Johu—-Fogarty of Birchville went Saturday to the picnic held on the South Yuba to celebrate the opening ofthe new county bridges. He indulged freely in liquid refreshments, then in the evening went home and created a disturbance about some blankets. His son James éndeavored to quell him when he drew a pistol and grasping the young man by the coat collar fired at his head. ‘As the weapon went off James struck itdown, and the bu.let passed between his arm and bedy, narrowly missed two of Fogarty’s younger children who’ stood by, then flattened against the stove, pistol fell of the floor when the . was fired, and after a struggle the son got hold of it. James Doyle and @ younger son of the shooter who were in the yard héard the disturbance. and hastened into the house. Fogarty senior fled. and has not’ been: seen since. Hissons came to the county seat Sunday and swore out a warrant for his arrest. ; cat ata tC EN A LUCKY TRIAL, The Good Fortune Which Followed. It affords me great pleasure to send to you this yoluntary statement of my experience in testing the merits of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. For the past five yearsI have been troubled with an exceedingly sluggish liver, including loss of appetite and distress after eating; pains in the back and kidneys, and boils ground my neck and face, 1 tried many liver remedies, only getting temporary relief. I was recommended to try a bottle of ‘“The California Remedy” Joy's Vegetable ‘SarsaParilla as @ test, and while taking the first bottle I became convinced of its merits, for I could feel it was working a change in me. T took five bottles, and during that time my troubles left me. Everything is working full and regular, in fact it has cleansed, purified and braced me up generally. I feel like another man. You are at liberty to use this as you see fit, or can refer whom you please to A MARVEL OF PURITY. ‘“Royal) a Perfect Baking Powe der—Absolutely Free from Lime and Alum, Tho Royal Baking powder is consid: ered by all chemists and food analyiste to be‘a marvel of purity, strength and wholesomeness. The official tests show, furthermore, that it is now the only baking powder before the public free from both lime and alum, and absolutely pure, It has come to be used almost exclusively throughout the country. This exclusive purity is due largely to the improved method by the userof which it has been made possible to produce a perfectly pure cream of tartar, from which all the lime, etc., has been eliminated. This chemically pure cream of tartar is excusively employed in the manufacture of the Royal Baking Powder, so that its absolute freedom from lime and all other extraneous substances is guaranteed, ; Professor McMurtrie, late chemist-. in-chief of the U. 8. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. ©., after analizing samples ef the various baking powders of the market, testified to the absolute purity of Royal Baking Powder as follows: ‘ ‘All chemical testa to which I have submitted it have proved the Royal Baking Powder perfectly healthful, of uniform, excellent quality, and free from every deleterious substance. ‘Wau. The Republican says: He was well known in Truckee and vicinity having been a resident of that place for the past twelve years. While he was working in a sawmill at Glenbrook many years ago he commenced the study of the law and by cloge application and :unaided he became sufficiently proficient tobe admitted to the Placer county Superior Courtin 1881. For two years he was Deputy District Attorney of Nevada county. He possessed qualities which had they been properly directed would have enabled him to make his mark in the world. He was generally esteemed and was regarded as an honest and upright man. His death isa sad blow to his aged and devoted mother and she hasthe sympathy of the community.
