WIDOWS AND-ORPHANS
Plans for the Masonie Home Considered.
The Offer Made.
For some time the Masons of Califor‘lent; Elward Coleman, Grass Valley,
freasurer ; William F. Perry, Oakland,
Secretary ; Albert Hansup, . Redwood
City ; Nathaniel G. Curtis, Sacrananto ;
Gilward F. Spence, Los Angeles ;. Jacob
Voorsanger, San Francisco ; Gustavus L.
‘pear, san Francisco; and George KE.
Whitney, Oskland. These men have
held monthly meetings and have gradually formulated the pln which will be
embodied in the report to be ma ie at the
voming annual convention of the Grand
Lodge.
What the trustees wat to do is to losate the hom2 near same one of the larger’
sities, San Francisc?, Ovrkland, Sacranénta, San José or Loa Angeles, One
large central building is wanted and a
aumber of cottag» houses. Children uader 3 years of age or over. 14 will not be
received. These orphans, § gether with
such half-orpkans as may be received,
will be required tu ga to school, and for
hat reason the board favors such a locasion as will make it possible for the chilIren to avail themselves of the advantages offered by the public schools. It is
tlao agreed that all these children
chall_ be employed according -to their
tge, in such household work, mechanical
or agricultural -mploy vent as may, be required for the success and comfort of the
heme.
It is proposed that. the needy widow
of a Master Mason shall be privileged to
keep her children with her and occupy
one of the cottages. Work tor herself
and chillren will be provided, and she
will be permitted to raiss chickens in the
cottage yard and earn money in any
other. way that may be suited to her
tastes and agreeable to the trustees.
Moat of the trustees are of the opinion
that it will require $100,000 at least to
wake a beginning. About $43,009 has
‘already been contributed by individual
Masons and lodges. In addition to this
several offers of sites for the home have
heen made. These offers are duly appreciated by the Board, but it decided
not to accept any one of them at this
time, because they are all more or less
remote from the centers of population
and are so situated that it would be difficult for the widows and orphaus to
obtain work.
One of the offers received is ‘hat of a
large building at Anaheim, together with
sixteen acres of land, six acres being
planted with fruit trees now in bearing.
The property is worth $50,000, but
individual Masons in Anaheim will agree
10 transfer it.to the board for less than
half that amount. ‘The Carnall-Hopkins
Company offers a twenty-acre site near
Pacitic Grove free of charge and_ will
agree, in case the home is built there, to
build an electric railway from the Southera Pacitic depot at Paci.is Grove through
the grounds, Geo E. Whitney of Rocklin
will give 400 acres of land near that town
for a site. and the citizens offer $5000
bonus. This Rocklin laud is, in part,
worth $200 an acre, and half of it could
be sold for enough money to create a
nucleus in the fund. A -tract. of land
worth $10,000 is also offered by ' Méndocino county Masons, who will give it free
of charge, provided the home is built on
the tract, which is not far from Ukiah.

California’s Headquarters,
The telegram describing how the Coleman House in New York had been decorated in honor of Jim Corbett, is. easily
accounted for. The fact is, the Coleman
Hvuuse is run by H. H. Pearson, who
used to keep the National Exchange

Hotel of San Frane:sco. Since the Coleman House passed into Mr. Pearson’s
hands it has Lecome the California headquarters, Mr. l'earson knew Corbett

Stopped the Machinery.
—
The young men who went from this
county to run the mining machinery at
the btate Fair have returned home. The
patronage of the pavilion was not sufficient
to justity the expense of keeping the machinery in operation but a few days, and
the Fair authorities shut down the
works, telling the operators that they
could not’ afford to retain’ them any
longer. They were requested to stay if
they could give their services gratuitously,
but they did not feél.that they could give
their labor for nothing and pay their own
expenses besides.—Grass Valley Uuion.

When the Trap is Sprung
Upon us, as it sometiine is, in a most unexpected manner by disease, we appreciate the fact that it is a most insidious
foe, and that not only is it necessary to
combat it by the most potent medicinal
agencies, but to prevent its manifestation atall by counteracting the causes
that produce it. Thus, expostire in wet
weather, the enforced wearing of damp
clothes during a storm, a thorough
draught, unaccustomed diet and water,
bodily or mental overwork, are breeders
of disease, but Hostetter’s Stomach . Ritters will prevent their inducing it. This
medicine fortifies the system against the
asaured effects such causes would otherwise produce. To the mariner, miner,
the outdoor laborer, the slave of the desk

it is of the utmost advantage. Dyspepsia,
