to identify an old acquaintance of his.
When he saw. his man he had no
hesitancy in declaring that he was
Ormstead Thurman, alias. Charles
Thompson, stage robber, murderer
and all-round thief, with a criminal
record extending over thirty-four

Jillson, formerly of Forest City, Sierra
county, and one of the original developers of the famous Bald Mountain
gravel mine is now working a gravel
minecalled the Blue Gravel, abotit
one mile and a half from Hanley and
two miles from Hornbrook station,
Siskiyou county. Upon a visit to
that station a few years since, he
became convinced from his experience
in. working ancient channelsin Sierra
county and elsewhere, that similar
deposits could be found there, for
plenty of gold had been found in the
modern rivers. For a nominal sum
he bought the ground he is now working. He then set to work to run
drifts, obtain water rights, etc. He
built seven miles of ditch and some
flumes, and has now some 800 inches
of water for three or four months, and
somewhat less béfore and after.
‘Phe preparatory work on the claim
has taken about two years, and this is
the first season that gold has been
produced. Witha light head of water, four week’s run paid 3314 cents
per cubic yard of earth moved, and
55 cents for every superficial foot of
bedrock stripped. Mr. Jillzon showed
the Press a fine retort of $3200 value
and about $1000in coarse guld nuggets,
