Having completely gobbled up his party, and secured beyond a peradventure his renomination, there is no earthly reason . why he should undertake now to pose . A shepherd isthe greatest need of the democratic flock, and no one is more available than Cleveland, and while . he has patronage to bestow, and hos finally cast out the mugwumps, he will . have no difficulty in securing all the party can bestow. The sheep hear his voice and follow him, but_a stranger they will not follow. . Speaker Carlisle is awaking to the . fact that he has a contested election . on his hands. The labor candidate, . Thobe, claims to have been elected . by several hundred m»jority, and has . filed with the Clerk of the House 0: . Representatives a voluminous mass of . evidence in support of his claim that . Mr. Carlisle and his party associates . cannot well ignore. Were the contest purely between a Republican and 2 Democrat, Mr. Carlisle might treat the claim with silent contempt, and it would not be the first time that a . Democratic Committee on Elections would ride rough shod overeverything. It bappens now to be a labor man ,representing a factor in coming events that must be treated with proper decency, and this is why Mr. Carlisle and his friends begin to feel a little nervous. Thobe has been at work, strictly to the letier of the law, and his evidence is said to be extremely damaging. Carlisle bas procrastinated in the hope of partisan vindication and filed no evidence, and now realizing his bad predicament, is going to fall back on technicalities and ask for an extension of time to meet the case. It is a clearcut case between labor and aristocracy, and up to this time labor has decidedly thé advantage. Of course the Republicans, always actuated by a bigh sense of horor and manly dealing, are determined that Thobe shall have fair play and an even chance and if duly elected to represent the sixth Congressional District of Kentucky, shall have his seat, or the country know the reason why. It is an opportune time to settle the quéstion of an honest election and fair count, and the workingmen _ of the country will watch with eagie eye the settlement of this issue. All things up to date, point to the fact that the astute Speaker has more on his hands than he bargained for, and that his party will be put to their wits’ and to extricate him from the very ux~ pleasant dilemma. and ifso;the rottenness f Kentucky ~ Bourdon Democracy willbe probed to and will do it. for that sort of work, in the whole: land. 1 ind of labor, and this is a fine opportunity. That Bureau is known locally as the Tennessee Department— the Commissioner snd nine-tenths of ~-the employes hailing from that prolific and fertile region. Atkins, the Comissioner, is a tall, lank, cadaverous inig fellow, who seemingly would “Tike to atone in old age the numerous indiscretions of youth, but is building his pyramid the wrong way. He is -trying to make a base of the apex, and hence the con‘usion of his office. Atkins himself most of the time is traveling about at Government expense. He leaves the management of the home principally in the hands ofa Cook, who, no doubt, is an estimable young lady, but hardly the “proper person to run Indian affairs.
