He Malignsthe Militiamen ofthe First
Artillery.
“Captain J. J. O'Carrell, alias O’Connell, of the regular army, appointed to
inspect the National Guard of California,
has filed his report. It was not expected that his comments on the First Artillery Regiment, of which the Nevada
City Company is a part, would be very
complimentary, ‘because they did mot
k-ep his paunch so fall of champagne as
did the San Francisco militiamen. He
has repeatedly shown himself tobe alickspittle by Ris truckling and sickening
a ulation of San Francisco commanders
who could make it ‘worth his while” to
be praiseful.
Captain O’Carrell says: ‘The First
“Artillery began. its annual encampment
on the 8th of August and aggregated 360
officers and men. ‘The material of which
this marching regiment is composed is
not of the very best, the ranks in many
companies being largely composed of
puny, narrow-chested boys, totally deficient in military bearing.”
After this despicable and unmilitary
attack, the inspector adds: ‘‘In guard
duty, skirmish drill and military courtesy, a decided improvement was gained
over last year’s rating. Sentinels performed their task cheerfully and with a
commendable degree of accuracy. There
was good work done in battalion and
skirmish drills, subject, however, to the
following exceptions:
' «Distances were at fault, lines broken,
in some instances the men were huddled
together in a’heap or scattered with large
intervening gaps; generally the step was

A GREAT INDUSTRY.
The ‘‘Wasp" Portrays the Ruin of
Hydraulic Mining.
‘The San Fiancisco Wasp of yesterday
pablishes a telling double-page cartoon . .
portraying the ruin-of the hydraulic mining
industry. There isa view of a big mine
with its flumes and sluices fallen into
decay. On the bank at the sidé“of the
jdle monitor are a miner and his wife and
babe, deprived of the means of earning
their livelihood and manifesting hopelessness and despair in their countenances,
In the miner's hand is a document reading: ‘Legislative Enactment. Hydraulic Mining Suppressed.”” Underneath the
picture are these words: ‘‘The Destruction of a Great Industry; Million of Dollars Made Idle; Thousands of Honest

Inflicted by the dread Torquemada, have
abominable prototypes in the shape of
chronic rheumatism and neuralgia. Attack these agonizing complaints before
they reach the chronic stage with the
superb blood depureut, Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters, which will assuredly
expel their virus from the life stream.
To procrastinate is to encourage the ”
growth of incipient rheumatism, which
rapidly tightens its grip upon thesystem.
It is the very octopus of diseases, and
painful-indeed is the clasp of its dreadful
tentacles. Be prompt then, take time
by the “forelock, always remembering
that both rheumatism and gout, close
relatives, are dangerous as well as painful.
Debility, chills and fever, billious re-.
mittent, dyspepsia, constipation, liver
complaint, nervousness and kidney disease succumb to the Bitters. Appetite
and the ability to sleep well are improved
by it. ;
