MRS. MACKAY AT NEWPORT,
She Don*t Take & Back seat for . (the Biggest of "Em.
Miss M. E. Wardwell, ina letter to
the Providence Journal, desgriptive of
a grand party at Newport,+"has the
fullowing to say of Mrs. J. W? Matkay,
among many other things: ‘*Oandor
compels one to own that Wer bodice
was strikingly decollete, even as Newport bodices go; but nobody minded
that in the least, for her throut was eur
rounded and her neck hidden by strings
of the most superb pearls ever seen, and
as large as moderate sized peas, They.
were clasped at the back %van
enormous sapphire set in wi, ot
diamonds. Everybody ler a.i
have one of those silken thre..
which they were strung give wi.y fc
scatter those treasures all over the
floor. “Wouldy’t there haye been a
scrambling, though? I think even
the dignified and stately leader of the
Four: Hundred himself would have
grabbed with thé rest, for just one of
those pearls represented a very comfortable:sum in the coin of the realm.
At the subscription ball on Wednesday night she wore her magnificent
rubies, like flames of fire set in
diamonds, and gave even Mrs. Astor a
tinge of envy as the latter lady held
her: little court in a cornef;* richly
dressed in*satin and tulle, and encased in emeralds and diamonds: that
flared gorgeously whenever the light
fell npon their thousand facets.’
To the foregoing theVirginia City
Enterprise adds: We are glad to see
that Mrs. Mackay still keeps up the
good old Sierra county and Comstock
fashionin dress. “As she has been
abroad some nineteen years among
the high-flyers of Paris and London,
sgmeé of our people had feared that she
might have falleo into the ways.of the
Old World fashionables in.the matter
df attire, butthis note from Newport
is redyustring. In a buall-room at
Downieville orin thiscity she would
find herself quite as much at heme
among our ladies as of yore, for they
still cling toand wear the old family
jewels. Mrs. Mackay is doubtless
doing us credit in Europe and elsewhere ; but: she isnot xo-young-as she
was—the people ef Newport, London
and Paris should see some of our more
recently blossomed. buds of beauty.
A Singuiar Find.
The Boise Statesman of Sept. 5 says:
An evening or so ago some of the
jurors who are now attending court in
Boise City were in the reading-room
oroneé of the leading hotels, when one
of the gentlemen related the following
account of a lucky find:
Mr. Benson, a dairyman who has
resided in Ketchum for the last two
or three years, has an old wagon which
“he bought eight years ag> in Boise
City. The wagon has been in use
nearly allthetime ever since. One
day lastJune Mr. Benson was going
over the summit with his wagon, and
something broke, In examining the
wayzon he found a piece of tin which
had been tacked on had come loose,
and in taking the'tin off two bars of
gold dropped out: It seemed as if a
hole ha@ been Cut in the wood and
the bars placed in this prepared space
and the tin tacked on to-cover it. Mr.
Benson sold the two bars of gold for
$1,700." Mr. Benson formerly: resided
in or near Boise City; his son-in-law
is now living near here.
There is a history connected with
this wagon ; but who can tell it? Who
isthe man that thus strangely bid his
bars of gold, and what became of
him?

ASalited Mine.
The Bear’s Nest. mine, in Alaska,
sold in London last year for the sum
of $1,250,000, has proved to be absolutely worthless, not a trace of metal
being found in the rock, whichis net
fit even for paving stones. The
purchase—was—made—on_the —recommendation of British experts who
sampled the ‘‘salted’’ core of the
drilling and pronounced the mine
more valuable than the Treadwell
gold quarry.
There Are no Happy Days
For those who continue to rise unréfreshed after a night’s unrest. Nervousness, insomnia, indigestion—these
constitute a triple alliance that perpetually wars against man’s comlort,1
and robs both brain aud body of tranquility. Combat the trio for a time
with Hostetter’s Stomach Bittere, and
i¢ will give ground and eventuaily fly
the-field. The basis of reform is the
rectification of digestion, for the brair
and nerve trouble is simply a reflex of
the di-turbince of that all im ortant
function. A wincglassful before each
meal of the nutional stomachic insures
facile digestion, and a repetition of the
pleasant dose before retiring promotes
nerve and muscle invigorating sleep.
Associated with indigestion we usually
find biliousness and constipation. But
together or independent of each otber,
these maladies are subjugated by the
‘Bitters, which also rémedies kidney
troubles, rheumatism, neuralgia and
malaria. y

DISCOVERY OF OXYGEN,
How the Vital Substance Was First Utilized by Lavoisier.
“Fixed air” and ‘combustible air’’
‘nad been speculated upon, and ‘the
air that is left after combustion” had.
attracted attention. But the phenomena of this kind, inconsistent as
they were with the phiogistic theory,
had not been sufiicient to overthrow
it. The first germ of Lavoisier'’s theory On these matters was embodied in
asealed packet which he deposited
with the Academy in 1770: “Recognizing that the calcination o! metals
could not take place without the ac
cess of air, and that the freer the access the more rapid the cu.cination,
he ‘‘began to suspect,” as he expresses-himself, that some-elastic fluid contained in the air was susceptible, under
many circumstances, of fixing itself
and combining with metals, and that
to the addition of that substance were
due calcination and the increase in
weight of metals converted into-calxes.
From this thought came, after much
groping with erroneous conclusions,
the idea that air is a compound. coataining a vital part and another part,
and that it is the vital part that is
absorbed. The behavior of charcoal
when burning in oxygen pointed to the
nature of that substance and to the
true theory of combustion This new
vital substance, which, uniting with
the metals, formed calxes, and with
other substances generated acids, he
called cxygen or the acid-producer;
the air that was left after combustion
was azote, or lifeless. The inflammable air which, combining with oxygen. was found to form water, was
called hydrogen.—Popular Science

THE CRUCIAL TEST.
The severe analytical tests to which the various baking
powders have from time to time been placed have demonstrated clearly to the public the relative merits of the
uitferent brands from a scientific point of view. The Govarnment chemists, for instance, have found in their offici:
tests that the Royal Baking Powder gave off the larges
amount of leavening gas, and therefore was the mos
They also found the Royal t
be absolutely pure, and the only baking powder that di
not contain either lime, alum, or bone or rock phosphate.
For these reasons they recofnmended it for Governmen
uses, and it is now used in the War, Navy and India:
But the crucial test of the kitchen is, after all, the
most satisfactory to the housekeeper. A baking powder
that never fails to make light, sweet, wholesome, and palatable bread, biscuit, cake, etc., is the one that will be
selected by the practical housekeeper and received into her
kitchen for continuous use. This test the Royal Baking
Powder has stood for over twenty years without a failure,
and hence its reputation as the best’baking powder made
. has spread from house to house, until its use has become
és universal as its merits are unrivaled.
