4 St. Louis gentleman whose affliction

cure by Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilla, that he

a Monday Evening.
‘The San Jose Mercury of last Tues.
day morning Says of the troupe which
will appear at the Theater here every
evening this week under Sam Mott’s
management: “Manager Buckley has
cause to feel good over the success
which attended the Steen-Abbot combination. Professor Steen and his
gifted wife have awakened an interest’
in their performances which has increased nightly for more than a week
past, the hall every night presenting a
healthy looking sight from a manager’s
standpoint. ‘The character of the sudience also is worthy of note, comprising ministers, lawyers, doctors, journalists and other classes of thinking
men and women who came to be enlightened and go away more mystified
than ever. Egery night during the past
week Steen has exposed the tricks and
frauds practiced by so-called mediums. He has duplicated their slatewriting humbugs, their knot-tying
feats and has offered large rewards to
any socalled medium that would prodace any trick which he could not
duplicate. The spiritualists have
turned out in a body and have highly
attended his ‘Seances,’ and have
roundly abused him and his wife for
refusing to call themselves mediums,
Professor Steen and Mrs. Steen will
remain another week and the Professor will during that time give the materializing tests and continue to expose
the humbuggery connected with spiritualism. The boy .magician and his’
dusky attendant will continue to
amuse for another week, and Abt will
continue his beautiful dissolving views.
This show as a whole is the best ever
given:in.San Jose.’”
Native Daughters? Notes.
All members of Laurel Parlor, N.

afternoon, are earnestly requested to
meet there.
The matinee to be held in the Pavilion -next Thursday afterndon
by the Native Daughters, at’ which
time the married members of
the order’ will be there with their
children, promises to be an overwhelming attraction. The. fond
mothers have after deliberation concluded not to accept the proposition
to let the little ones contest for a prize,
as they say the youngsters are all so
handsome that no committee could
decide between them.

A Rare Collection of Books,
The faculty of the Wharton School of
Finance and Economy, at the Univer
sity of Pennsylvania, have been steadily developing during the past months a
library which, now that it has reached
very large dimensions, is making its importance felt. The foundation was laid
by the great collection of the late
Stephen Colwell, compri between
seven and eight thousand volumes, and
including nearly every important book
on the subjects of finance and _ political
economy in the English, French and
Italian languages published before 1860,
This was supplemented by the bequest
of the library of the late Henry 0:
Carey, which embraces many later
works and pamphlets, and is especially
tich in statistical literature, -European
government reports and the like.
Some time since, in addition, a ‘collection of about 8,000 English pamphlets-on‘ financial and economical subjects, formerly the property of Mr. MoCalmont, ef London; was obtained,
covering the period from the close of
the Seventeenth century to our own
time, and botind in clironological order,
Professor Bastable, of Dublin, has pronounced this to he better than the similar collection of the British museum. It
is necessary, of course, in order to keep
mer with the times, to buy the best of
@ new books within the scope of the
Wharton school. An annual fund has
accordingly been provided for this pur.
pose, and a number of works, several
of them fresh from the authors’ hands,
which weré selected by Professor J ames,
have arrived at the university. A doepartment of the library of especial interest is that pertaining to municipal
government,—-New York Star.
; Swallowed a Dollar.
James Clemens, a prominent young
farmer, who lives near Athens, Ga.,
swallowed a silver dollar. Clemens was
lying across a bed at his home and had
a dollar in his mouth. Being very tired,
he suddenly dropped off to sleep. He
awoke very soon alterwards with a most
excruciating pain, and it developed that
he had swallowed the money. He arose
immediately and came to the city. Dr,
W. A. Carlton endeavored to draw the
dollar from the throat by meéans of
an instrument, but owing to the nervous condition of the patient he was
forced to postpone the operation a day.
The money hud passed lowe the throat
and lodged in the esophagus, Clemens
was placed under the influence of ether,
and after a difficult and dangerous oper
ation the dollar was brought up through
the mouth. —Cor, Savannah News.

The importance of purifying the blood can.
not be overestimated, for without pure
blood you cannot enjoy good health,
At this season nearly every one needs a
good medicine to purify, vitalize, and enrich
the blood, and Hood’s Sarsaparilla is worthy
your confidence. It is peculiar in that it
strengthens and builds up the system, creates
. 0 appetite, and tones the, digestion, while
it eradicates disease. Give it a trial.
