resolution of the stockholders, the
number of shares has been increased
from 16,000.to 160,000 with a corres
ponding reduction in the par value of
shares from $109 to $10 per share
which are to be issued as “‘paid up’’ to
the extent of $9.50, leaving fifty cents
per share as due and unpaid, or in the
aggregate, $80,000. The company
owns nearly two miles in length of
one of the righest silver lodes in the
world, one particularly rich in silverchlorides, as well as large bodies of
low grade carbonates that are worked
at a great profit. The property was
worked six ‘years ago, but only since
August 12, 1885, was the company
known as the Broken Hill Proprietary
organization. The product thus far
has aggregated only $1,528,000 less
than the total gold product of Victoria
for the ten years ended with 1887.

Tidings: “Mrs. 8. Yeo and Mrs. T.

N EWSPAPERS.
The Relation That They Bear to
the Public.
Wm. H. Mille cf San Francisco de‘livered an address to the Press Association of California on the relation of
the press to the public. He makes
many good points and among them are
these:
‘“‘4 newspaper is property; yet one
owning it cannot own it absolutely to
use as he would, for he is responsible
to the public for its use. We have the
rural and metropolitan press. The metropolitan journal has a franchise
equailed by no other, or that at all
compares with it. It towers above all
railroad and transportation and all
otlvter aggregate powers.’’ He illugtrated this by a sketch of the growth
and power of the Associated Press. He
drew a graphic picture of the gathering and transmission of news and the
power springing from ability to -publish news ahead of its date of occurthus brought under your daily. obserSothe power of the metroIn rural
Any worthless fellow can cofne into
the field of any really good, hardworking, deserving paper, and by the
credit a.clean sbirt gives buy his paper and get out a first number from a
job office, The rur.] press wants a
franchise that will augment in-value
the older it gets—that franchise you
can get only by organization; have
the organization-represented in San
Francisco and N+w York, and the rural
press will get two or three times what
it now gets for advertising. “Then the
new fellow cannot come in and crush
the individual paper, because he cannot get into your association.”* He
wanted theSjournalist not to cheapen
his business, not to educate the communities that the wages’ of rural
journalism are worth little, to take
eare that the people are not educated
to believe that space is nothing of cost,
that the rural newspaper man Etands
the. right to live. Let journalists. remember that independence in journalism means profitableness in journalism. They must have their profitablenecs, and they must secure it. Mr.
Mills thoroughly exposed the folly. of
advertising in books and special sheets,
directories and wrappers and pamphlets, by statements of fraud that all
the floor knew to be correct statements,
The place to advertise is in the leyitimate, regularly established newspapers. He raked the people fore and,
aft for contributing thousands, of dollars to the fellows who come into towns
and cities and get up sp-cial editions
of special sheets no one knows are
ever distributed, and thus clean up
tens of thousands of dollars that if distributed through the twelve months of
the year in the regular paper would
have been the only wise action. The
rural press wantsa franchise, he repeated ; it wants to be understood as
indispensable to community life; it
wants the'right recognized of the rural
press to be sustained and built up. If
the community mikes the press of a
town five times as valuable tomorrow
as-itis-todsy,that comunity will get
five times the benefit from it. The but in essaying to drive into Mr. Yeo’s
premises, Mrs. Yeo having descended
from the vehicle and ofiened the gates,
the carriage was run off a narrow
bridge, one wheel dropping into the
gutterway.: Mrs. Hocking was thrown
violently forward, but clung to the
dashboard and a rein, the horse in the
meantime dragging the vehicle to the
sidewalk, thence through the gate,
leaving a wheel in passing, and
through the driveway to the reur of
the premises, where the occupant
reined him in on the verge of a twofoot embankment. Had the horse
been one of the kicking variety, Mrs.
Hocking would no-doubt have been
seriously injured. Under the circumstances she escaped with a few bruises.
Oo :
The Contempt Proceedings.
The Sutter Farmer says: Several
contempt proceedings ayainst the
North Bloomfield and Omega companies were had on Monday, ‘ruesday and
Wednesday of this week before Master
in Chancery Houghton of the United
States Circuit Court in San Francisco.
The plaintiffs have had their evidence
in for some time, hence the time was
chiefly consumed by the defendants.
They offered but few witnesses, who
made no denial of having mined since
they were. enjoined, but sought to
break the force of their guilt by claiming that they were impounding their
debris or were going todo so. Every
point claimed by the complainants was
conceded, and their whole: reliance is
in the utility.of restraining worke.
There Are ne Happy Days
For those who continue to rise unrefreshed after a night’s unrest. Nervousness, insomnia, indigestion—these
constitute a triple alliance that perpetually wars against man’s comfort,
and robs both brain and body of tran-,
quility. Combat the trio for a time
with Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, and
it will give ground and eventually fly
the field. The basis of reform is the
rectification of digestion’ for the brain
and nerve trouble is simply a reflex of
the disturbance of that all im: ortant
function. A wineglassful before each
-meal of the national stomachic insures
facile digestion, and a repetition of the
pleasant dose before retiring promotes
nerve and muscle invigorating sleep.
Associated with indigestion we usually
find biliousness and constipation. _But
together or independent of each other,
these maladies are subjugated by the
Bitters, which also remedies kidney
troubles, rheumatism, neuralgia and
malaria. :

weak-faced, worn, threadbare newspaper of a town does the town harm

the last copy is worn out. A town
with. such a paper ought to sue it for
libel. The community, then, owes
the rural press a franchise; ifit won’t
give-it; organize and command it.
Educate the people to pay, and pay
well for newspaper values; educate
them to leave the transient and outside sheets alone. Gather the statisties of the waste of money on those

A Scrap of Paper Saves Her Life.

She was in the last stages of consumption, told by physicians that sbe was).
incurable and could live only a short
time; she weighed. less than seventy

she read of Br. King’s New Discovery,

she bought a large bottle, it nelped
