WHERE THEY WILL SEARCH.
The attorneys who have the matter in
charge think it probable that part of the estate may be in Nevada and other counties in
California than San Francisco, for while
they have evidences that Patrick Berry, a
wealthy miner, sometimes visited San Francisco, they have not been-able to find his address in the Directory for the year 1889,

Generalship and Book Knowledge.
The greatest soldier who ever liyed—
Alexander of Macedon—though he slept
with Homer under his pillow, had probably never seen a book on military art,
and though Von-Moltke was a student,
we may be permitted to doubt if Marlborough ever was. He read only Shakespeare zealously.
Certainly in our time no able man who
wanted a chief for any great undertaking of any kind would dream of asking
the limits of his reading or would be
able to avoid a silent’ prejudice against a
candidate, partly unreasonable, but partly also the result of a traditionary experience; if he knew that he was in any
special degree a student of books, He
would think him a man apt to be misled.
Indeed, in one great. condition of efficiency, perhaps in practice the greatest
of all conditions, we should assign to un. read men—we do not mean uneducated

Rossini’s Memory.
The composer of ‘‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia” twas blessed with a not very retentive memory—especially for names of
persons introduced to hin—a forgetfulness which was frequently the cause. of
much merriment whenever Rossini was
acareful investor and a man of economy,
he soon had a vast fortune; but he always
preferred bonds and gold to all other forms
of investment, After the death of his family he mever married again, but seemed to
live te accumulate money.”
Continuing, with increased interest. and
anxiety, the aged narrator said: ‘‘I came to
America myself many years ago, but went
back and located at Blackpool, the famous
watering place of England, because I was
a common laborer and there was plenty of
work among my old friends.. When I left
America brother Patrick was very -rich-at
his home in -Wisconsin, but he quadrupled
what he then had when he came West and
embarked in mining. He was very busy dure
ing those years of mining and I was hard at
work, so we did not correspond for over a
quarter of a century. We lost track of
each other entirely.”
HOW HE GOT THE NEWS,
‘ “An old friend of ours named John Hopkins, whe knew Patrick in California and
who was godfather of his children in Wiscensin and Ohio, came all the way to Ireland to find me last year, but when he got
there they sent him to Blackpool, where he
found me at work, He told me of my
brother’s death and that he had left the
whole estate with a secret society in trust
for his nearest relative. I agreed to meet
Hopkins at Buffalo, N. Y., in March last,
but I was injured bya falling building and
could not come, The letters I sent him
never reaghed him, so I came on to America
with my niece just as soon as I was able,
physically and financially.”
‘‘Have you seen Hopkins since your arrival?” ;
“No, sir, He was not at his house yesterday when my attorneys called, but I
expect to find him in a day or two and get
full details of the lovation of the money and‘
bonds, It is a pity that I had lost his exact
address so I could not commuicate with him
before I came here, but it has no doubt
caused me only a little delay.”
ADVERTISING FOR AN HEIR,
“Did you never*hear about the fortune
left you from any other source?”
**Yes, the newspapers of San Francisco a
few years ago, I was infermed, coutained
several long advertisements for the address
of any relative of Patrick Berry, or for the
address of any person who knew of their
whereabouts, Four or five people have told
me all about the advertisement since I came
to America, and these informants were in
different parts of the country. Their stories
agreed so well that I ain sure the advertise~
Sy 2 ment was inserted. Of course I never saw
‘ it in Europe, for there are so many advertisements of that. kind that the English
