CFPFICE, c Ro. 32 Gomoiercial street, Nevada City, Cal. eee Se OQ UARCULATRS IS Nevada City Grass Valley, Rough & Ready, Santee Ye North San Juan, French Corral, Sweetland, North Bloomfield, Moore’s Flat, Graniteville, Truckee, and every other towu of Nevada county; also in Placer sud sierra counties, al Saciamento, San Francisco—in fact, thronghout the State =frum 3iskiyou to San Diego from the sierra to the Sea.”* ~ {UESDAY, SEPT. 23, 1890. . The Wonedrful Stiow Plant. One remarkable flower of the Sierra Nevad: range is that ireaile and p radoxies! wonder, the snow plant, know: to. botanist as sarcodes sanguinea, meaning “blooded.. flesh.” Ne hirg' was ever more exquisitely Lean ial than this rosy, snow-tinted Lutanic.} oddity, ithas the a#ppearanew ef being a crowned hyacient. It grows twenty-eight inches high, each separate bract, sepal and mitiuture) bell frosted as delicately as theugh dote by the hand of the ice king himself. Although the whole tranlucent spike is flushed with rose and carmine, the petals are the deepest and most brilliant, parts of the flower, whichis five-parted, each open gue plainly showing the tittle frost ed stamens and pistils. The Long expedition (one of its members being the original discoverer sarzodes) found one of the two specimens of the plant bearing eight perfect flowers, one of them having a false bulb twenty or more inchesin circumference, shaped like a pineapple and as britile asspun, gloss. Hard to the touch, this pseudo bulb dried up in afew days until it was no larger than the edd-looking icicle-hke stem upon which it grew. Floriculturists ofthe Pacifie slope bave made many unsuccesssful attempts to cultivate the snow plant, the bulbs being too brittle to stand transplanting and the seeds refusing to grow. It was once supposed that it would not survive below the line of perpetual snow, but this idea lately been proved to be erroneous. One thingis sure, however, it makes its early growth while covered with many feet of snow as the bud is exposed. A Pavilion Prize. A decora'ed china dinner set will be offered as a prize this week to patrons of the Fair Pavilion. After. the Nimrods Found Their Game They Employed Others to Kill It. Ex-City Auditor Vernon Whitésides . tells one of the most in hunting experiences. Walden’s Ridge, about twelve miles from Chattanooga, Tenn., is yet in a state of nature, and here can be found alinost impenetrable forests and the wildest of glens and gorges. It is a favorite place for hunt‘ers, the woods being full of the larger game—bear, deer, catamounts, etc. "Phe city auditor thus relates his experience on one of his hunts: “I started out witi-Bob Hagen and two or three others fora bear hunt. We had told a good many of our friends that we were going after a bear, and that we wouldn’t come home without a bear. -We all climbed into a farm wagon and started. It is a rough road up the ridge, and we did not get to the place wher& we expected to find the bear until! night. Here we saw’ an empty cabin, and concluded to take possession. So we stretched , ourselves out on the puncheon floor, and were just falling to sleep when Bob Hagen jumped up, crying: “ ‘Boys, Joe’s caught something.’ “He took off his boot to see what he had caught, and found that it wasa house snake, which had crawled up his trousers to keep warm. We all adjourned to the wagon for the night, and the.next morning, bright and early, we started to look fora bear. Meeting a native, we asked him if he knew where we would be apt to find such an animal. “Why, Isaw b’ar tracks a spell ago up on the shelvin’ rock "bout five mile down yer,’ he observed. “So we went to the shelving rock, meanwhile beating the bush in every direction, so that it was 11 o’clock by the time we reached the rock. At first we could see no way to get upon the but finally we noticed that a smncli tree stood close énough for us to clim) up that way, so we were soon on the rocks. ‘*“T don’t see any bear,’ said_ Bob. *“T don’t believe there is any bear,’ I replied. ‘Let’s eat.’ “N\7e agreed to that proposition, spre:d our lunch, placed our guns agaist a tree and started to supply the inner man. ‘I wish we -could at least see a bear,’ said Bob. : ‘HTello, look there!’ said one of the We ull looked and saw a bear that looked as big asa horse between us and the guns., I was‘nearest to the tree, and consequently first to the grotind; but the others were not far behind me. When. we'reached terra firma we began to discuss the matter. We had come after the bear, we had found a bear, and now it was clearly our duty to go back and kill the brute. I felt as though I hadn’t lost any bear, and having nothing against bruin I didn’t want to kill it; so we drew straws as to which should go back first. I got the unlucky straw and started, but when the top of my head was even with the rock I grew faint hearted and slid back. Bob tried it then, and-carefully looking over the rock he madé a break and got the guns. Then we all went back and beat around the bushes for a while, but we did not find any bear. Then we started for home, and on the way we met the naive, “ * Did you find the bear? . ** ‘No,’ we answered in chorus. . . _** Well, he war thar,’ replied the . — aforesaid native. : 3 “I offered him $10 to go and get the bear, and he started. Inside of half an hour he came back dragging bruin by one of its hind legs. He got the $10 and we got our bear.” —St. Louis GlobeDemocrat. Usefal Bugs. B. M. Lelong, who has been visiting the east, looking up parasites and studying the habits of insect pests, has made an important discovery in Washington, D. C., in the grounds of the United States department of agriculture, almost directly under the windows of the entomological de; walking through’ the grounds he noticed a ladybug feeding on the aphis, and on closer examination he discovered that it was devouring the aphis, and that it also breeds as fast or nearly as fast as the wonderful vedalia that has almost entirely exterminated the cottony cushion scale of this state. This ladybug is the Adalia bipunctata, of which Mr. Lelong captured as many as he could find, making two large colonies, one of which ‘he sent to Col. Dobbins at San Gabriel, and the-other to Mr. Runyon, near Sacramento. This ladybug feeds both on fhe scale and other insects, and it is to be hoped that it will prove a great help in clearing up the scales and aphis of this section.— San Francisco Chronicle.
