Gillette ef the Corps of Engineers, U. 8. A., who-was detailed by the Secrétary of War to act as assistant to the California Debris Commission, arrived at the Bay a short time age and has entered upon his duties. Lieutenant Gillette was formerly assistant to Colonel Merrill, in charge of the improvements to the.Ohio river, ‘and just before his ‘present detail was on the staff of. General Miles, with headquarters at Chicago. He is a young officer of rare ability, and will be of great absistance te the Debris Commission in facilitating the resumption of hydraulic mining under the Caminetti law, especially as Colonel Mendell, Lientenant-Colonel Benyaurd and Major Heuer, who constitute the Commission, have other important duties, such as attending te the rivers, harbers . and lighthouses, on their hands. Thus far the Debris Commission has received only four formal applications te mine by the hydraulic process under the Caminetti Act, butit has had numerous requests for information ‘from mine owners who may apply for licenses later along. The four formal applications have been from the owners ef the Kelly Hill Gold Gravel Company of Butte county, the Farrell mine, belonging to the Eureka Lake and Yuba Canal Company Consolidated, in Nevada county, the Omega mine, in Nevada county, and the Brandy City mine, in Sierra eounty, The only license granted as yet has been te the owners of the Farrell mine. This was signed on September 8th, Hera fully described in these columns at the time, The Farrell mine is now in successful operation, and has the right to run to the full capacity of its impounding works. In the matter of the ‘applications of the Omega and Kelly Hill mines, ne licenses rhave yet been granted, but orders have been issued authorizing those mines te build restraining works, plans and specifications ef which are to be submitted to the Debris Commissioners, for its approval. The latest application is from the Brandy City mine. This was made Wednesday by A. Steinberger, the owner, who asks for permission to-mine by the hydraulic process in the Brandy City district at Brandy City, Sierra county, and to deposit tailings in an ‘Old Hy dratilic pit. The mine is a large.one . and was very productivy in earlier times. . It is proposed to mine abeut ten acres of the ground, The Debris Commissien has set Octeper 10, 1893, at 1:30 P. m., as the day and hour when a formal hearing will be given: On and before that date -all parties interested may appear and file affidavits, plans and maps in support ef their respective claims. Friday the members of the Debris Com-+ mission left for Sierra county to examine the Brandy City mine and te‘see if the im: pounding werks' will be adequate, — The resumption of. hydraulic miving i is likely to be given a greater impetus after. : the annual convention of the California Minera Association is held in San Francisco October 9th. Important actien will be taken by that bedy to secure the financia} aid of the Government in building restrainingdams, The last Legislature of this State apprepriated $250,000 fer this purpose, conditional upon-the Government making an appropriation. The prospects cf the hydraulic miners are improving, and as work is resumed in a lawful manner without injury to the agricultural lands and the navigable streams, the State and the world at large will get the benefit of a steadily increasing output from this source. The Executive Committee of the AntiDebris Association held a meeting in Sacramento a fewdays ago and discussed the advisability of resuming hydraulic mining under the Caminetti Act. After listening to reports from the associatien’s engineers upon the sufficiency of the restraining works at the Farrell and the Omega mines it was decided to wait anether month before coming to definite conclusions, and the committee atinmaet to meet o on October 16th. In an age of Sinks and adulteration, it is certainly gratifying to know that such an extensively used preparation as Ayer's Sarsaparilla may be implicitly relied upon. It never varies either in quality, appearance or effect, but is always up to the standard, Strength and Health. If you are not feeling strong and healthy, try Electric Bitters. A granddaughter of Delacroix received the following curious proposal of marriage from the famous Champfleury: ‘‘Mademciselle—If you believe, as I have heard, that an unmarried person is like the half of a pair of scissors, which, is useless without the other half, I offer you my sympathies, the material of life.” The young girl’s answer was the gift of a pair of scissors, fol~ lowed by a marriage three weeks later, If they had lived in Nevada City, they would have patterned after so many other sensible couples and bought their provisions of Gaylord. oie SHILOH’S CURE is sold on » guarantee! it cures Incipient‘Consumption. It was expected that the rate would be less this year, in fact the county rate will be some ten cents or more less, but-the State—taxes~are—correspondingly higher this year, which will make the average abeut $2.45 on the $100. —+-2@e + ~ morning.
