Sun Francisco, Sept.21, 1891, ad Ther tition an Its Last Legs, They Are Now Trying to Brace It Up By Misrepresentation. The San Francisco News Letter of today thus mercilessly castigates certain papers at San Francisco and’ in the Sacramento Valley that have loag been the subsidized and cowardly tools of the antiinining conspirators : The Marysville organ of the so-called Anti-Debris Association, reflects the ner-! vousnes3 which is beginning to creep over the camps where the enemies of California have hedged themselves in for the final struggle. In an over-zealous attempt to excuse its friends and patrons in the last . diten, it draws liberally upon the imagi ination to account for a very natural turn of affairs. When it says that the News Letter has been subsized for the purpose of ‘‘molding public opinion by creating sympathy,” it shows plainly that the situation i3becoming desperate. _ Making . misstatements will not help to bolster up the tottering old fabric over their heads, now that common sense and reason again hold sway over-the: people of sf State. The. Newa Letter has until. lately been the only San Francisco paper _to protest. against the outrage against the public welfare; and it did 4o simply. bedawse it-wa: jadividual “interésts. We have always considered that the attack on the hydrantie mining interest was a direct injury to the people of the State at-large, and_this has been clearly proven to theentire satisfaction of every one, now thatthe report of the Cominission appointed by the Govsrament has been made public. ~The total damage fyom debris during the past thirty years.does not exceed $3,000,000, ind _at the same time thé loss to the 3tate inhard coin will exceed $10,009,)0) annually. ‘These are the facts which save created what is termed ‘‘sympathy”’ for the hydraulic interest ; cold, hard facts, which will weigh all the more heavily with the mercantile classes, who have low come to recognize that -they have just been deprived of the use of all these nillions of gold in their bnsiness, to hu‘nor the whim of a lot of cranks—to “use v mild term: If there has been any subsidizing of paJers, it has been on the other side of the rouse. Self-interest and the timidity begotten of a slavish abusement to “ring” ‘ule has muzzled the press of the-State, vad kept them mum on the subject for years past, butitis highly probable that sublic sentiment will, in the near future, force the papers into a position which shey should have taken long ago in the interest of the States. shat their prolonged slience has in many There is nodoubt astanves been due to a misconception of the true facts of the case. Everything
hat the Anti-Debris Association said was “vetepted as gospel, and they certainly 1ave succeeded in making themselves out 1 badly injured class of people. The recent investigation has, however, shown io the contrary, and much surprise is ex pressed that in view of the circumstances she men who have been reduced -to beggacy by the virtual confiscation of their oroperty, should have borne their grievanxe3 80 quietly and with so much fortitude. ‘While there may be some honestly inslined people connected ‘with the antilebris movement, they can only be considered as the pliant tools of others, who nave been working with some ulterior bject in view. They have retarded the levelopment of the State, ruined hunlreds of prosperous mining towns, and driven people from their homes and proparty, on pretences which -have. not. been What they have to l@ now, in order to maintain their posihorne out by facts. sion, or even to claim a right to be heard, is to show how they have compensated che State atlarge by their interference, 4 for the lass of $30,000,000 in gold during the past seven years, How much of this enokmous sum would it take to buy up the whole imiserable outfit, and pack them bag and baggage over the State lines?
