E. Weiss, a resideat of this city since
1850, aud a well-known aad respected
citizen, died this forenooa at his home oa
Sacramento street., He had been ill for
along time. He wasa member. of Oustomah Lodge of Odd Fellows.
The funeral will take place from Odd
noon.
Mr. Weias was born in Alsace, France,
July 10, 1823, and lived there until 1334.
Thence he went to. Basel, Switzerland,
where he remained until 1843, learning
brewing. He next traveled through the
French provilces, spending three years
in Southern France,returning home from
Paris in 1847. In 1848 he sailed from
Havre for New York. February 6, 1850,
he left New York for San Franciseo and
builta brewery and tou se here, and they .
_were destroyed by the great "56 fire. In
the latter year he built his present house
and brewery. In 1853 he married Miss
Caroline Lampe, a native of Germany.
They have had ten children, of whom five
daughters-and two-sons are living: One
hree daughters (Mésdames Urquhart,
Ligon and Urquhart) ‘in San Francisco,
and one daughter (Mrs. Albert Turner) in
Stockton. All of the children were at
thelr father’s bed side when he died.
The tunnel in the Manzanita is in one

The San Francisco News Letter of today thus mercilessly castigates certain papers at San Francisco and’ in the Sacramento Valley that have loag been the

of ‘‘molding public opinion by creating
