A. Few: Indacemeuts Which Nevada County.)
Offers to Settlers.
During the past few weeks the Transcript has received about a doze letters
from as many different States asking for
the information herein contained, and to
save letter writing is the reason for this
publication:
~First-<-Large areas Of fertile lands, seeured by Government patent, can be purchased ‘at such reasonable figures that a few
hundred dollars is sufficient to pay fora
amall farm. * :
Second—The standard fruits grown in
this county are the finest of their varieties
grown in the world. They are of a superior
flavor and have a firmness of texture that
gives them better shipping and keeping
qualities than those grown at lower alti
tudes, and they fiud a ready market at remunerative prices.
Third—The long summers permit of the
rotation of crops, and the raising of two and
even three different crops from the same
land in a single season.
Fourth—There is a ready market for all
farm products at good prices.
Fifth—There are excellent means of transportation, the railway penetrating the central portion of’the county.
Sixth—There is an abundance of timber.
Seventh—There is an inexhaustible supply of pure water, both for irrigating and
domestic purposes,
Kighth—The temperature is mild, both
in summer and winter, and is not subjeet to
sudden changes.
Ninth—The climate will compare favorably with that of any other section of the
Pacifie Coast, even with the most. favored,
there being no malaria with its resulting
chills and fever, no violent winds, no fogs,
uor floods, :
Tenth—The children reared in this climate and ‘at this altitude above the Bea
usually acquire better physical constitutions,
with more plumpness and firmness of muscular development as well as color and vitality of the blood than those reared in the
valley or even coast counties. :
With this brief statement of facts, however, let it beunderstood that we do not
claim for Nevada county that it is a paradise on earth, nor even the popular romance
of -substropical glories. :
—
Nevada county lies a little north of the
central line of California, and contains a.
population “of about 25,000. It extends
from the summit of the Sierra Nevada
mountains, on the east line of the State,
westward a distance of seventy miles to the
Sacramento Valley. It is from. twelveto
twenty miles wide. The altitude is from
two to three thousand feet along its central
portion and less than one thousand feet ele
vation in the western or valley region. The
line of the Central Pacific Railroad crosses
the eastern boundary, and traverses the
southern portion ‘of the county for many
miles. It then enters Placer county, following close to the southern boundary of
Nevada county till near its western limit.
The Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad
connects with the Central Pacific at Colfax
and extends thence north to the central portion of the county, passing through Chicalgo
Park, Grass Valley, and terminating at
Nevada -City—twenty-two miles from the
Central Pacific Overland Railroad. The
central portions contain most of the rich
gold mines, including quartz, hydraulic and
placer, mines together with the upper portion of the Horticultural belt, while the
western or foothill region consists exclusively of agricultural and grazing lands.
The horticultural and agricultural section of
the county comprises about 250,000 acres
of land, a large per centage of which is
adapted to cultivation. The topography of
the county is such as to give variety to the
products. We grow successfully in Nevada
county: Oranges, lemons, citrons, figs,
olives, Bartlett pears, apples, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, hazel nuts,
black walnuts, ¢cMestnuts, almonds, and
every kind of vegetable grown.
Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada
county. There are five daily, one tri
weekly and three weekly newspapers published in the county. :
The fcllowing named towns are in Nevada county: Nevada City, Grass Valley,
‘ Truckee, Boca, Rough and Ready, Spenceville, Indian Springs, North San Juan,
Birchyille, Sweetland, Cherokeé, French
Corral, Columbia Hill, Lake City, Malakoff,
North Bloomfield, Derbec, Moore’s Flat,
Orleans Flat, Graniteville, Ormonde, Washington, Alpha, Omega, Bear Valley,’ You
Bet, Quaker Hill, Hunt's Hill, Red Dog,

SINGER SEWING MACF'INES
This machine is made after the Jatets modes ftom
Singer Machines, and is a perfect fac-simile in make, ° of
namentation and appearance. All the parts are made to
gauge exactly the same as the Singer, and are constructed
of precisely the same materials.
The Chicago Singer Machine have every important improvement in a loose balance wheel so constructed as to
premit winding bobbins without removing the work from
hesmachine.
The loose balance wheel is. actuated by a solid bolt passing through a collar securely pinned to the shaft outside
of the balance. wheel, which bolt is held to position by a
strong spiral spring. When a bobbin is to be wound the
‘bolt is yulled out enough to release the balance wheel,
and turned slightly to the right or left where it is held by
a stop-pin till the bobbin is filled.” When the machine js
liable to be meddled with by children, the bolt can be. left
out of the wheel when not in use, so that the machine
cannot be operated by the treadle,
The driving w .1eel on this machine is admitted to be the simplest, easies
running and most convenient of any.
