A Pair Who Grew Nervous While Clerk Hare
Was Sealing Their Doom.
Democrat: George M. Mathews, a resident of southern Yuba county, and Miss Allie
Walker, a fair daughter of Spenceville, Nevada county, tripped seftly into Clerk Hare’s
office this afterneon and by their actions impressed his clerkship that their business with
him was ‘‘strictly cenfidential,”’

a smile and a blush fighting for posgession
of the wily Clerk countenance.

when the couple began to grow nervous
and wishing to in a degree relieve the dead
silence of the moment, George turned to his
intended, rubbed his horny right hand ovér
his troubled face and stammered out:
do you feel?’ She answered in tremulous
tones: “I feel pretty well.” The Clerk bit 15
cents worth of a 25-cent cigar into a jelly in
his endeavor to k&ep frem—-bursting into a
