scone AS my Daily Paper publichea North of Sacramente. x CIRCULATES IN ada City, Grass Valley, Rough & Ready, . fal, Sweetland, North Bloomfield, Moore's Fiat, Graniteville, Truckee, and every other town of and Sierra counties, at Sacramento, San cisco—in fact, throughout the State + “from Siskiyou to San Diego, from the Sierra toe the Sea.” _ Published Daily (Mondays excepted) by : 3 —BROWN & CALKINS-— ‘ OFFICE: No. 82 Commercial street, Nevada City, Cal. THURSDAY, SEPT. 22, 1887. NEVADA COUNTY. Sood Reasons why Settlers Should Come : to This Section. —_— We’ copy the following ;from the _ *Nevada County Fruit Land,’’. which vas just been published : This edition is published gratuitousyy by the Nevada County Land and -mprovement Association, for the purdose of furnishing interested inquirers . with information relative to the advanages which Nevada county offers to actual settlers who are seeking homes dn fertile lands, in a country free from che rigors of northern winters and the snervating heat of more tropical cliniates,as weil as from the dread thunjer storms, tornadoes and cyclones which sweep over such large areas of . less favored sections of our great ccunwry. We ero-met at the outset ‘with this nquiry: “What are the inducements ‘which your section of the country of‘ers?’ wee As a preliminary answer to this . question; we will state that, amongshe inducements offered, are the folowing: First—Lerge areas of fertile lands, i portion of which is still open to aemestead and pre-emption by actual settlers, while other areas are already vecured by government and can be . ourchased at such reasonable figures hat a few hundred dollars is sufficient ® pay for a small farm. : Second—The standard fruits grown n this county are the finest, of their varieties, inthe world, and find a eady market at remunerative prices. Third—The long summers permit ag of tWOo” and” éven three different rops from the same land in a single eason. : Fouith—There is a ready market for li farm products at remunerative rices. Fifth—There are excellent means of sansportation, the railway penetratag the central portion of the county. . Sixth—There is an abundance of tim. . } er. Seventh—There is an inexhaustible apply of pure water, both for irrigatig and domestic purposes. Eighth—The temperature is mild oth in summer and winter, and is >t subject to sudden changes. Ninth—The climate will compare faorably with that of any other section ' the Pacific Coast, even with ‘the \ost favored, there being no malaria i . { . . ‘ith its resulting chills and fever; no . State. ~ ~) usquitoes, which are such a torture » the flesh in the lower altitudes; no, ind storms, such_as sweep over the indy plains of the southern portion the State ; ne violent winds ; no fogs, hich are characteristic of the Coast vanties, nor floods such as periodiiy sweep over the valley. Tenth—Excelient schools in all secons of the county. Eleventh—The children reared in sis climate and at this altitude above 1e sea, usually acquire better physiil constitutions, with more plump28s and firmness of muscular devel“oment, as well as color and vitality * the blood, than those reared in the alley or even any of the coast counas. With these plain statements of fact, owever, let it be distinctly underood that we do not claim for Nevada punty that it is a paradise on earth, oreven the popular romance of subopical glories ; for the climate, though ealthful and invigorating, and usuily free from extremes, has, like that ’ f all other portions of this coast, “its bad spells” and exceptional freaks. he sky, though asually bright and srenely blue, is sometime overcast ith cloud and storm, and that too at xceptional seasons. The fruits which re both prolific in production and of iperior size and flavor, are yet sub‘~~ et to injury from neglect, and are .metimes affected with blight, or inred by frosts and insect pests, and ur people, even in this ‘glorious cli‘sate’ grow old, and sicken and die; ad yet, notwithstanding these ad‘iigsions, if you or your frends are ‘king a home in a climate which is i ealthful and free from great extremes, ‘1 a land which, with careful cultiva_ion will yield abundant returns, /mopg 2 community where your chilren ean have the benefit of a good jucation, and at the same time aclire a cound constitution and a splenid physical development, then the ets set forth in these coluinns are orthy of serious thought and confe woe enna nnn Split Peas. HE CENTURY IS AN ILLUSTRATED Monthly Magazine, having a regular circulation of about two hundred thousand copies, often reaching and sometimes exceeding two hundred and twenty-five thousand. Chief among its many attractions this year isa serial which has been in active preparation for sixteen years. It is a history of our own country in its most critical time as set forth in THE LIFE OF LINCOLN, By His Confidential Secretaries, J.C. Nicolay & Col. John Hay. This great work begun with the sanction f President Lincoln, and continued under he authority of his son, the Hon. Robert ‘Tf. Lincoln, is the only fulland authoritative record of the life of Abraham Lincoln. Its authors were friends of Lincoln before his presidency; phey were most intimately associated with him as private secretaries throughout his term of office, and to them were transferred, upon Lincoln’s death, all his private papers. Here will be told the inside history of the civil war and of President Linecin’s administration,—im portant details of which have hitherto remained unrevealed, that they might first epposrdn this authentic history. By reason of the “publication of this work, NOVELS AND STORIES. “The Hundreth Man,” a novel by Frank R. Stockton, author of ‘The Lady or the Tiger?” etc., began in November. Two noyelettes by George W. Cable, stories by Mary Hallock Foote, “Uncle Remus,” ° Julian Hawthorne, Edward Eggiestone, and other prominent American authors will be printed during the year. THE WAR SERIES, Which has been followed with unflagging interest by a great sudience, will occupy less space during the coming year. Gett ysburg will be described by Gen. Hunt (Chief of tbe Union Artillery), Gen. Longstreet, Gep. E. M. Law and others; Chickamauga, by Gen. D. H. Hill; Sherman’s March to the Sea, by Generals Howard and Slocum. Generals 0. ‘A.
