CELT ATAALI LESS IL ‘The Daily Transcript, a > NEVADA. COUNTY. ae The following article is from the advance sheets of next month’s iseue of Howell & Strachan’s ‘State Resource es,” which will be largely devoted to Nevada county : ' 1 Were the attractions, resources, and advantages of Nevada countyas much heralded abroad, and as generally S44 Castoria is Dr. Sam’l Pitcher’s old, harmless and quick Children’s Complaints. Superior well known.to the average Easterner and foreigner who comes to California, ia order to spy out the land either with the intention of becoming a pérmanent : : settler, only out of curiosity, or ip Sa en 3 search of something which might! offer oD promise of a good paying investment, there would be hundreds come here to one who now makes the trip. We do not desire to be accused of making an —assertion, which we cannot substantia‘e and shall therefore, in as condensed a form as possible, give a few reasons why people wauid visit this section if they were conversant with its inducements. What brought people from all parts . ofthe earth first to California? Gold. “Nevada county is today the greatest gold producing county in the State, and her mineral wealth is by no means . exhausted. New mines are being constantly discovered, and a greatmany old ones continue to add their yearly quota of millions to the _ country’s bullion product, ; What took settlers to Napa, Santa Clara and other counties styled fruit growing counties, and raised the price of desirable land to from $100 to $600 per acre? Simply the knowledge of the fact that peaches, pears, plums, cherries, grapes, etc., would yield large returns tothe orchardigt, backed up by: the most liberal kind of advertising. Now we have not a word to say in depreciation of these counties. It is an in-, disputable fact that they are great fruit and wine producers, and that in many cases an orchard of only a few acres, is a sufficiant c mpetency for a family But we do say, that the price of the land on which the fruit and vines grow has reached such a figure as to virtually exclude those of modest means, who would like to engage in horticultural pursuits. Wedlsoaffirm that as good, and in some respects, superior, results are obtained. by fruit growers in Nevada county, though the industry has not been pursued to the same extent, and that land can be obtained here at such reasonable prices that those of very moderate means may secure-a home. Especially are the peaches, pears, and apples of this section of superior size and excellence, both for flavor and keeping qualities, so that they are tavorites in the market, particularly for shipping purposes. What has served to build up such sections as that which surrounds Fresno, andat the present time to cause the founding of several colonies at Meri ced-andin Kern county? Water, made available by a series of reservoirs, canals and distributing ditches, so that it could be used for purposes of irrigation. Now there is no better watered region in the State than Nevada county. The source of supply isinexhaustible, the means of distribution are adequate to present demands, and can be indefinitely incgeased as necessity may call for them. What brings whole heaps of people to California who are satisfied with their income in the East? They want toescape theterrible and trying severity of the long winter. In Nevada county you can find a variety of climate. Inthe highest part of the Sierras, from whence comes the water supply, the snow and ice never melt. But let us take Nevada City, which has an elevation of about 2600 feet above sea level. Here some snow always fells during the winter season. Last winter was the heaviest ever known and agreat deal fell, but it never lasts long, and the cold, as compared with such cities as New York, Chicago or Bosten, is: pleasant spring weather. During the warmest dayso gummer the nights are always cool and refreshing. The atmosphere is elear, bracing and conducive to vigorous health. Malaria is unheard of. POPULATION, Nevada City, according to the census justtaken, bas a population of about 3,000. If the resources-of the ccunty were anything like developed its inbabtitants would be five times this number and its business sharea similar increase. Why is this the case? We can only repeat what we said before. Its advantages are not known abroad, This is owing in part to the fact that it has been looked upon as altogether a mining county, and that the suppression of hydraulic mining caused @ great reduction in the annual output of gold, and fora time put a damper upon mining throughout the State, and it is attributable partly to the lack of available, reliable and widely distributed reading matter regarding Nevadacounty, for it is well known that the principal part of the visitors to California go to those places which have been most prominently brought before the public by the newspapers and periodicals of the day. swor Over Haifa Century. Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup has been used for over fifty years by millions of mothers for their children while teething, with perfect success. It soothes the child, softens the gums allays all pain, cures wind colic, and is the best remedy for diarrhea. Sold by druggists in every part of the world. Be sure and ask for ‘MRS, WINSLOW’S SOOTHING SYBUP,” and take no other kind. Twenty-five — Castori on + Sour Stomach, Diarrhea, : INSOLVENT NOTICE.
