A Man Falls Overboard and Is Reseved
After @ Three-Days’ Ficat.
A. M. Battye, engineer of the steamer Gulf of Trinidad, who arrived at
Plymouth recently from Barbadoes,
narrates an almost unexampled adventure which befell him during the
‘voyage of that ship. The Gulf of
Trinidad, while voyaging from Iquique
for Europe, encountered heavy weath‘er, during which, soon after twelve
o'clock on a dark night, Battye was
washed overboard. The accident was
observed on board, and a life-buoy
was immediately thrown over and the
vessel stopped. Battye sunk deeply
when reaching the water, but on rising to the surface he struck out swimming and reached the life-buoy. The
way on the steamer had carried her
far beyond him, and though the boat/
was lowered the prospect of finding
him in such weather and at night was
almost hopeless. Battye’ soon ceased
to see the ship, and when daylight) ¢
broke he found himself alone on the
life-buoy a hundred miles, so far as he
knew, from any help. He kept afloat
throughout the next day, although the
tropical heat.of the sun was intense.
The following night he suffered terribly from being without any thing to
eator drink andin momentary danger
of being swallowed by the sharks of
that region. Another day he held on
with amazing endurance, his physical
exhaustion and mental anxiety being
intense. For the next night he ceased
to feel hungry, but suffered from excessive thirst. The third day dawned
to find him still in the same position.
On the evening of that day a Norwegian bark passed close by him, the
steersman of which saw an object in
the water and thought he saw Battye
move. The bark was immediately
put about and a boat lowered, and after a short search, found the buoy,
with Battye still clingine to it, although when taken on board the bark
he wis still insensible. + He was treated with great care and kindness by
the Norwegians, ¢ and,* being transferred to a home ship, has arrived in
Plymouth, to tell his marvelous tale.
He is a fine young man, about twentythree years of age. The Norwegian
captain retained the life-buoy as amemento of the wonderful! adventure. —

army has dwarfed the newspapers.
That is the inevitable result. Perfect
liberty of the press can not exist where
great standing armies rule and where
peace or war of oppression is at the
will of the sovereign. In truth, we
might add, as the German army is
twenty times stronger than that of
the United States,,the newspapers
of the United States are twenty times
better than those of Germany. We
might carry the same rule into Russia, where the standing army is still
more powerful and oppressive, and
where the newspaper amounts to even
less than in Germany. g England hag

verdant boot and shoe drummer who
went “sniping?” Sunday night, was
subsequently made the victim of the
funnel trick, which is thus described:
It consists of dropping a coin from the
foréhead into a funnel held in the
waistband. It was gone through with
in the presence of a number of jokers
with various degrees of success. Then
Franks was persuaded to try it, but
not until after he was assured that it
wouldn’t cost him anything. He essayed the feat cautiously, keeping a
watchful eye on those around him,
and failed. Then he became excited
and threw prudence to the wind. With
a gallon funnel in his, waistband, he
bent far back and placed the coin on
his forehead. Then hali a gallon of ice
water was poured into the funnel by a
bystander. Franks left. on the midnight train for Trackee, bearing a card
pinned on the back of his coat on

/ & Burglar's Clever Trick.
“One of the neatest tricks Ihave
heard of in some time was perpetrated
by a pair of burglars in this city lately,” said a police captain toa New
York, Graphic reporter. ‘‘The younger
of the two had entered a private residence while the inmates were at tea
‘and the elder stood outside on watch.
The rifler was discovered and was soon
chased from one floor to another by
two gentlemen members of the household. Somebody. called ‘Police!’ and
the outside burglar, drawing his revolver, responded. » ‘There, these,
ladies; don’t make any fuss. [ll take
care of this fellow,’ he said, and making a rush he grabbed his mate by the
as he led him down the stoop. The family breathed more freely and the gentlemen prepared to go to the stationhouse to swear out acomplaint. When
they arrived there nobody had heard
of the case. The burglars had vanished. It’s an old trick, but I haven't
heard about it in this neighborhood in
many years.”” ;
= y What Did He Expect? ~_
Here is a story from Harrison street:
4a young dude bargained for and got
a light-colored spring overcoat for
four dollars, and walked out of the
store admiring himself. In two minutes he came back, and, diving his
hand into the pocket, said to the
clothes dealer, holding up two cockroaches: —. ~
