injuries from which they may die.
The scene at the wreck beggars description. The two powerful engines were
turned completely over and lay partly down
the grade a mangled mass‘ef iron and steel
from which through the open furnace doors a
fitful glow lighted up the -distressing. and
heartrending scene. Iron raily were twisted
and the ties splintered to atoins,
Wagons and poles strewed the vicinity,
and from beneath their cruel pressure came
occasional cries of pain; deuvting where seme
poor unfortunate soul was lying faint and
bleeding. : fe
Horuy-handed but true-hearted men
sought among the ruins with lights for some
missing companion or chum, and when the
flare of the torches revealed his presence
strong arms carried him gently to a place of
safety.
Scarcely had Dr. Jones attended one pa
tient before anether mangled and bleeding
body was brought to him for aid.
S,ecial engines and private conveyance
brought medicine, skill and relief to the injured as soon as news of the dreadful calamity reached the city.
Manager Kidder, Supt. Brown and Conductor Charles Loughridge and other railroad officials were promptly at hand, and
after doing all in their power to alleviate
the sufferings of the injured, that part of the
train which remamed en the track was
pulled back te the Grass Valley depot, when
the dead and wounded were promptly cared
for,
Those who worked side by side with them
knew not the names of the unfortunate.
The mangled bodies were placed en the
train and brought to the depet where the
names and extent of the injuries ef the
fortunate were learned to be as follows:
Andrew Hirst, of Colfax, aged 17: years,
killed. ;
Hank Jones, preperty man, killed.
Joseph Jones, canvas man, head smashed,
wrist broken. ;
unAl. Crowell, groom, head smashed, riba
broken and arms badly bruised.
Bill Spevins, cook, leg broken and serious
internal injuries,
Tom Russell, legs badly bruised.
Dan Coughlim, engineer, sprained about
hip. wo
Jus. Duffy, fireman, bruised about body.
lt is thought the anly ‘one seriously injared is Spevins, the.cook.
It is feared that one or two others might
have beeen killed and laying under tle

The grizzly bear is buried under the debris
and cannot escape even if it is not injured.
The damage to the engines and cars cannot be estimated, but it will be a very considerable amount.
The railroad company cannot be blamed
in any manner for this most unfertunate
accident. : a

ANTEST .
From Henry Mell ef Grags Valley, who
left the scene of the wreck about 10 o'clock
this morning, we learn that the track had
been cleared at that time and one section of
the circus train, proceeded on its way to
Colfax. “The mail aud passengers were taken down-on this’ train.
A large crow of men are at work: roniove

The valuable ring ‘horse called Chesterfield, for which Mr. Sells says he has refused
$2,000, was seriously injured, besides ‘several
others being badly hurt. One of the lions
ag killed and it is thoaght that another one
has escaped, as -he is missing. “. The bears .

timbers of the wreck. me ‘
Qne-man anda boy dere killed, and four
other men were 8 vert ly injured. Two of
the latter are at Grass Valley under the doctors care and the other two went’ on with
the circus,, One of them had his-foot badly
smashed and his-arm and hip hurt. The
four injured persons are members of the
circus company. : Aan
The show was advertised to exhibit at-Auburn this afternoon and evening. They
may possibly be able to give their evening
performance.
Three cars were derailed, besides twe engines. One car was tilled with fine horses,
the other cars contained the cages in which
the bears and lions were kept.
It is theught by some that the accident
was the result ef having too long a train of
heavily loaded cars, which caused the car
wheels to bind on the rails when passing
arouad the curves, thus fercing the track
apart and causing the second engine to be
thrown off, taking with it the ferward ea—
gine and the three cars,
As the Narrow Guage new has only ene
engine in working order it will be rather
slow work removing the wreck and. run~
ming trains besides. Seme of the trains will
probably have to be cancelled tor the present,
The Narrow Gauge Railroad Company’s
officials estimate the company’s loss at from
$5,000 to $6,000 and the C'rcus Compaay
put their lose at $4,000 or $5,000.
