1 : 2) . a "Now, David Fulton Douglass, having an— . i . . GHE GRANSGRIPT TRURSDAY EVENING, SEP1., 7, '93. AT HIS. HEAD. A Man With Brief Authority Thioks He Is Cock -of the Walk. } — Sheriff Douglass publishes a card in this morning's issue of the Grass Valley Union, in relation to the gambling games that were so openly conducted at the*cireus grounds on Monday afternoon and evening. That usually very vigilant official claims that he didall in his power to prevent gambling there and to protect the people from the base impositions that were practiced upon them by the thieving manipulators of the shell game. He alleges that. he sent Under Sheriff Neagle and Deputy Sheriff Pascoe out to keep ‘ta close watch on the circus, but no gambling or swindling of any kind was going on while they were there. We are ot the opinion that the officers ‘didn’t look very close, or they would have! seen the shell games running in the side show, as there is no getting away from the fact that they were conducted both. during the afternoon and evening, and ina very bold manner at that. , a The Sheriff says he was not able to visit the circus personally. At least 500 peaple know this. to be a misstatement, as Mr. Douglass did attend the circus Monday evening and was chaperoned about the big tent by one of the:managers of the show. _ He says in his card that the Transcript reporter should have notified the officers who the guilty parties were. We were not aware before that it is the special duty of a hewspaper man to hunt up crime and make complaint to'the officers. _ We wil! examine the Code, and if we find that we are mistaken as te onr duties we will hereafter netify the Sheriff of everything we hear ‘or see of a criminal nature. The thievery that -was carried on at the circus in the afternoon was common talk en the streets an hour later, and we. believe information of the fact reached the Sheriff's office about-as avon as it did anywhere else. : Mee “Tt-Sheritf Douglass made the-mistake of allowing the offenders to escape arrest, he ~ should gracefully” acknowledge the corn, instead of trying to shift the—blameupon his deputies first and then upen the TraySCRIPT reporter, and above all sheuld confine himself strictly te the truth. After takitig a determined stand against gambling. itis surprising that he should let such a rascally; set of blacklegs pull the wool over his eyes. swered your card, will you be kind enough to answer the following questions : Have you been coinpelled to increase the size of your hat since you were appointed Sheriff ? How comes it that you did not close up the wheel of fortune game at the Park on Thursday, Friday and Saturday? Of course you caused the arrest of the parties on Wed. Was it because one of the lessees of the track told you if you did he-would-beat—you for the nemination for Sheriff? Of course that was not the reason, but a denial from you would please ‘your friends. :Did you not know that’ the reason the "circus man was cavorting around with you by the arm was for the purpose-of diverting your attention from the thieving gambling that was going on in the amall tent ? Do you not know that gambling is going on nightly in the Chinese quarters, sometimes all night? If it isa good law against white men, why should it not be against Chinamen? Why this partiality ? Do you not think it strange that almost everybody who attended the ciicus knew the thieving gambliag games were going on, except yourself, who was there pro pria persona ? Why do you single ont the Transcript for attack when every paper published in Nevada county printed in brief an account of the swindling gambling games that were allowed to goon? ¢ ; Do you think that we empley our reporter te go around amd hunt criminals, when Nevada county pays you te de that business? You are fooled if you think so,, If in our article we censured you er the Sheriff's office, will you point out the word or sentence to that effect? You knew such @ statement is untrue. Now, David F ulton Douglass, after you have answered the above questions fairly and squarely we will ask you a few dozen more, In closing we would say that the columns of the Transcript are open to you, free of charge, to answer the ubove questions. en areddee ea Matrimonial. — The marriage of Miss Janie Thomas, eld— est daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Thomas, te Mr. Alfred Martin of San Francisco, took place yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, at the home of the bride's parents, near this city. Rev. ‘Mr. Garver of the Grass Valley Congregational _ Church performed the ceremony. After the nuptial knet had been tied a fine wedding breakfast was served, About fifty persons were present. Joseph Thomas, Jr., and Miss Edith Hoskins, and Johnson Thomas and Miss Hattie Thomas stood up with the happy pair. The bride isa very estimable young lady, and the groom is-said to be a most worthy gentlemen. Mrs. Martin was the recipient of many beautiful presents. Simmons Lrvex Requiaror is my only family medicine.—Rev, J. M. Rollius, Fairfield, Va, : ee People Taking Advantage of the Reduced Rail cae The reduction of railroad fares to $80 for the round trip to Chicago and return has had the éffect of greatly increasing overland travel. Speaking of the effect of the reduction, the San Francisco Chronicle says: ‘A rush of travel to the East has set in within the last few days. All the ticket offices are doing a lively business, although the direct lines te Chicago have the call. For some reason the tide of travel begar to swell at the moment the new $80 World's Fair rate went inte effect. ‘Fer the past few days the Gentral Pacific express has been pulling out with seven to eight sleepers—generally eight—and the travel ison the increase. If it gets much heavier the overland express will have to be hauling to make good time and connections, Carrying so many passengers also overcrowds the capacity of the dining car and causes delay and discomfort. ‘Two sections would necessitate ‘two dining cars, and the prospect is that it will come to that pretty soon. “On. Thursday the dining car between San Francisco and Sacrau.ento will be replaced by one of more modern équipment and larger capacity. The ‘Castle Crag’ will be the first diner to. go out under the mew arrangement. “Freights are looking up a little, but grain is still slow moving to tide water.” ——-+ 80+ Suckien’s Arnica Salve.
