Seated in the grand stand from which the rates are viewed,’a beautiful panorama is spread-out-before the observer. Thrifty young pine trees stand up tall, trim and fresh, andthe undalating fields within the valley are carpeted with verdure even in August. It ‘is inspiriting to sit here and watch the sharp contests of speed tothe moving throng of people and vehicles as they come and go during the lively days of the fair. There isa freshness in the air as well as beauty in the scene, all of which conduces to. make Glenbrook a favorite resort during these annual exhibitions. The arrangements for the stabling of ~ stock and the comfortable accommodation of attendants are superior to those of most fair-grounds in California. Thestalls are large, and besides being goodly in number are built in the . ’ midst of a:pine’grove, where there is ample shade during the heat of the day and stock can be exercised without discomfort to -man or beast, The nights are cool and there are no troublesome mosquitoes or flies. The fruit exhibits were not so fine as they might have been had the fair been held a month later; still there was a creditable showing—enough to demonstrate that Nevada county is to be an important factor in the coming fruit production. of the State. In cereals, and especially in root crops, squashes, etcs, the diaplay wag surprising. In fancy-work by ladies the exhibit was of remarkable excellence, while the paintings and art-work by local artists showed that much attention is being paid to these finer mat ters by the people of our mining districts. A year afterward che was again tn the same store, and on inquiry learned that the girl was at the head of the department. ‘She putas much life into her work as ten ‘other women,”’ said the manager. “ One of the most prominent: business men of New York eaid once: “I have always kept a close watch on my employes, and availed myself of any hint which would show me which of them possessed the qualities requisite for success for themselves and usefulness tome. Many good workmen who are faithful to the letter of their contract with their employers remain salesmen and book-keepers until they are gray-heuded, while others pass over them and become heads of establishments of their own. To the first class their employment is only so much work for so much wages; they “have no he@rt in it;”’ to the second, according to the old significant phrase, it is an (outlet for all of their own energy and ambition.
