H. G. Parsons, traveling correspondent of the Pacific Rural Press, writes.
to that paper a very imteresting account,
of the recent county Fair, Among
other things he gays :

ings. The, inclosure devoted to the
uses of the association is in the center
of.a beautiful basin or glen, with a
circle of finely wooded ‘hills all abont.
Seated in the grand stand from which
the rates are viewed,’a beautiful
panorama is spread-out-before the
observer. Thrifty young pine trees
stand up tall, trim and fresh, andthe
undalating fields within the valley
are carpeted with verdure even in
August. It ‘is inspiriting to sit here
and watch the sharp contests of speed
tothe moving throng of people and
vehicles as they come and go during
the lively days of the fair. There isa
freshness in the air as well as beauty
in the scene, all of which conduces to.
make Glenbrook a favorite resort during these annual exhibitions.
The arrangements for the stabling of
~ stock and the comfortable accommodation of attendants are superior to
those of most fair-grounds in California. Thestalls are large, and besides
being goodly in number are built in the . ’
midst of a:pine’grove, where there is
ample shade during the heat of the
day and stock can be exercised without
discomfort to -man or beast, The
nights are cool and there are no troublesome mosquitoes or flies.
The fruit exhibits were not so fine as
they might have been had the fair
been held a month later; still there
was a creditable showing—enough to
demonstrate that Nevada county is to
be an important factor in the coming
fruit production. of the State. In
cereals, and especially in root crops,
squashes, etcs, the diaplay wag surprising. In fancy-work by ladies the
exhibit was of remarkable excellence,
while the paintings and art-work by
local artists showed that much attention is being paid to these finer mat
ters by the people of our mining districts.

The colors of the fabric proved to
be fast, and the customer bought it,
and asked the name of the obliging
shop-girl. A year afterward che was
again tn the same store, and on inquiry learned that the girl was at the
head of the department.
‘She putas much life into her work
as ten ‘other women,”’ said the manager. “
One of the most prominent: business
men of New York eaid once: “I have
always kept a close watch on my employes, and availed myself of any hint
which would show me which of them
possessed the qualities requisite for
success for themselves and usefulness

the window of the counting-room, I
observed that the moment the clock
struck six all of the clerks, with but
one exception, laid down their pens,
though in the middle of a senteiice,
and took up their hats. One ma
alone continued writing. The others
soon passed out of the door.
** “Pettit,” said one, ‘has waited to
finish his paper, as usual’ 3
‘Yes. I called to him to come on,
but he said that if this was his own
business he would finish the paper before he stopped work.’
“‘The: more fool: he! I would not
work for a company as for myself.’ *
“The men caught sight of me, and
stopped talking, but after that I kept

hours on my business. ‘because he
would have done it on his own,’ and
he is now my junior partner.”
The success of a young man or woman in any-work or profession depends
largely on the spirit which he or she
puts into it. Many good workmen who
are faithful to the letter of their contract with their employers remain
salesmen and book-keepers until they
are gray-heuded, while others pass
over them and become heads of establishments of their own. To the first
class their employment is only so much
work for so much wages; they “have
no he@rt in it;”’ to the second, according to the old significant phrase, it is
an (outlet for all of their own energy
and ambition. An engine, perfectly
finished and competent for its work,
with no fire in it, is a fit type
of the first class; the same engine with its steam up, rushing
along the track, of the second. Be
sure, boys, that you are able for your

Would-be Desperado Captured.
The fellow Chastain, who disturbed
the religious meetings in Magnolia
district last week and wanted ‘‘to see
the color of the coat of the officer who
could arrest him,’’ was run to earth
Thursday in Secret Canyon, several
miles: from Gold Run, by Constable
» Dyer of Colfax, who was two days on
the trail. When Dyer said “You are
my prisoner,” the fellow weakened
like a schoolboy caught by a farmer
and hisdog ina choice apple tree.
Dyer brought him to Grass Valley
Friday morning, and before Justice
Paynter he pleaded guilty to a charge
of ‘‘wifully disturbing the peace of an
assemblage engaged in religious worship,’ a misdemeanor. He was sentencedito ‘pay a fine of $57, which
amount he immediately produced.—
