25 sites known as Antaimo and Hoitem Melep. Both were temporary camps made use of during times of hunting, fishing, or gathering. Portions of this map may be difficult to read. Sites that move east along what is now Highway 50 are as follows: starting at Kwotoa in order, Bubuhu, Matinpakan, and Witumpakan. Sitting just south of these sites there are Molma, Hoyhupe, Chehuhuhe, followed by Saskian. Saskian was called Tempa by Littlejohn's Miwuk consultant. Due south below Bubuhu and Molma is Moluilui and Tudote. MaP7 ~ NISEM K’AUWAK’ DISTRICT Map 7 is a representation of the territory of the Homah or Nisem Kow-wahk. Merriam had thought that the Homah were a band of the larger Nisem Kow-wahk tribe. Mrs. Barron clearly stated that she and her people called themselves Nisem gow-wahk or Wur-ta gow-wahk (Merriam n.d. p). She also stated that there was not a single term to call all of her people. Of the people who maintained the political affiliations from the Nevada City, French Corral, and Grass Valley regions and their environs I will use the term Nisem K’auwak’, a more conventional orthographic representation of Merriam's title Nisem gow-wahk. An English comparable phrase would be ‘we are all relatives/relations of this area, of this place’.a The Nisem K’auwak’ District)encompassed the areas of Nevada City, French up —__. _ a eo — ‘ Corral, portions of Brown's Valley, Geass Valley, North Bloomfield, Washington, and : on gt © wee Downieville (Merriam n.d. i, p & Litdejohn n.d. a).
