During the summer of 1856, Amos T. Laird & Co constructed a dam across Deer Creek to impound water for their extensive ' system of mining ditches. This dam, located about six “miles above Nevada City, backed up water to the FRUITS & VEGETABLES» sweeping GRAP EFRUIT a CELERY CRISP, GREEN ......Se thirty feet with it the wreckage dam raising the creek level fifteen feet above any previously recorded high water mark and flooding the lower section of the town.
