Bill and Public Law 16 (disabled veterans )wWas down 18,000 from the record Fall enrollment reported last November. According to Veterans Administration records there were 141,424 veterans enrolled in California schools at the end of February, “compared to 154,725 in November. The heaviest loss of student veterans was in Northern California schools, which reported 51.000 students at the end of February, compared to 61,000 last November. Following is a breakdown by VA regional offices showing November and February enrollments. ' The Regional area Nov., 1947 Feb., 1948 Los Angeles 88,468 85,385 San Francisco 61,1241 50,904 San. Diego 5,136 5,135 Totals 154,735 141,424 Student veterans attending schools, colleges and universities full-time under the G. TI. Bill, and who want subsistence for more than one dependent under the new subsistence law passed by Con gress, must.furnish proof of a *second .dependent, the Veterans Administration has. pointed out, Eligible veterans with one de. pendent, or no dependents at all will receive their increase to $75 and $105 a month automatically about May 1. The raises will also be automatic to disabled veterans studying under Public Law ‘16, since VA already has information on file regarding the number of dependents. However, veterans studying under the G. I. Bill who want the $120 a month subsistence for more than one dependent must apply for it. These veterans are urged to contact their nearest VA representative or office immediately. They should bring with them birth certificates, or. certified “copies, proving that they have at least two dependents. ~ CONVICT LAKE Convict Lake, Mono County, is reported by National Automobile Club to have received its name from the part it played in a desperate prison break of 29 conviets from Nevada Penitentiary ‘at Carson City in 1871.
