ANEW BROOM
The old saw “A new broom sweeps clean’’ has a
particularly apt application here in Nevada City. A
short time ago, the people elected three new members
to the city council.
Soon after they took office, the brooms of the
city street crew began busily polishing the streets every
morning at 6 A. M.
As a result, our town is
look’, a clean and spritely appearance that is extremely
gratifying to everyone.
City councilmen
as this, when appreciation
expressed. ee
Another important achievement of the council is
the improvement of the baseball diamond, which is now
in prime shape.
So to new members. Harry F. Sofge, Merle Head-.
ley, and Thomas H. Taylor, as well as. incumbents
Arthur Innis and Mayor Albert S. Bates, we say, congratulations on a job well done!
(Note: This is not to be construed as a negative
reflection on any former members of the city council,
who almost invariably have done an excellent job in
meeting city problems during their terms of unselfish
public service.) H. M. L., Jr.
have a thankless; payless job.
Their reward comes only in a sense of having done
their public duty and, perhaps, also in such instances
developing its own ‘new
of their -workis publicly

Atlas 46 Yields Five
Bushels More Per Acre
DAVIS: Atlas 46 barley, resistant to powdery mildew and scald,
has outyielded common Atlas
which is. affected by these two
diseases by five bushels per acre.
This announcement came recently from University of California College of Agriculture
agronomists at Davis where the
new variety was produced. It is
expected to replace Atlas which is
now a leading variety, they ‘said.
Seed was available to growers
last fall.
In 13 nurseries where mildew
infection was severe, Atlas 46
produced a 16 percent larger yield
than common Atlas, University
agronomists disclosed. In 19 lo
cations where there was no mildew, there was no difference in
yield.
The yield differences were
caused by shorter heads and fewer
kernels per head which resulted
from early infection, they explained. Growers have never fully
appreciated such losses because
they do not show up at harvest
time.
At present, Dr. Fred.N. Briggs,
co-producer of Atlas 46; is attempting to add resistance to net
blotch, a third serious barley disease, to the Atlas 46 variety.
