The over-all simplicity and massiveness of the new, 1948 Chevrolet is wel
shown in this three-quarter view of the Fleetmaster Sport Sedan. Fenders
hood, body and door panels all blend; and the crease moulding, below the
windows, is wider than that used in previous models. Note the new T-shaped

His Majesty’s Court: The Nursery
For Whom Was Sweetland Named
The town was named after a
prospector named Sweetland, although some have ascribed the
naming to one of the other brothers, for there were three at a later
date, James Otis and Henry, but
to Charles belongs the credit for
the naming of the town.
Charles had lived down near
the river, with a woman, who under promise of marriage, had
borne him two children, a_ girl
who was five years older than the
writer, and a boy who was about
the same age, but died and was
among the first four to be buried
in the southern part of town.
The mother went by the name
of Mrs. Barnum, whether that was
her maiden name, or if she had
been married, we do not know.
. We do not know what became of
the father of the children. We
never heard of his death, or
whether he decamped leaving the
maintenance of his children to
the mother, who supported the
two by taking in washing.
Emma Barnum went to schoo}
with the writer; was a very nice
girl, and at last when schoo] days
were over, was granted a certificate by the board of education of
Nevada City. However, she never
taught, as her mother would not
leave home and go with her, nor
would she let Emma go alone, as
she had been very strict in her
training of Emma from her early
childhood. Both joined the Catholic church and were strict adherents to the. faith. Both mother
and daughter passed away many
years ago.
Location of the Town of
Sweetland
To describe the location of the
town is rather difficult. South of
the town is a high hill extending
from East to West, and ending
in what is known as “Buckeye
Hill.” At the base of the hill.is a
stream named Sweetland Creek
which takes a westerly course and
at last empties its contents into
the Yuba river. The high hill
west of town extends in a northSEQPHIDING

Teddy bears, puppies, and kittens romp across he wall paper of

So Sweetland was located, as it

A small creek at the baste of Manzanita Hill flows in a southerly

a place southwest of town. This
creek was unnamed and was supplied with water from. tunnels
previously made when prospecting on Manzanita Hills, and also
a small reservoir north of the
town, presumably built in early
days to supply water for running
the saw mill.
