Leo Edward Boyle, a Nevada
County resident since 1932, died
Sunday in a local medical facility.
He was 80 and a resident of Cesar
Ridge.
Son of the late Edward and
Bridget (Monahan) Boyle, Mr.
Boyle was born April 23, 1909, in
Butte, Mont., where he received his
early education. At age 14 he began
working in Butte area mines. After
moving to Nevada County, he
worked in area gold mines until the
1950s when he went into the construction industry in Califomia and
Alaska. He retired in 1967.
Mr. Boyle was a member of
Labor Union Local 185 and of the
Catholic Church. His wife Mable
died in 1988. $
Survivors include a son, Leo of
Pataskala, Ohio; stepsons Grant
Hafelfinger of Manteca, Dale
Hafelfinger of Grass Walley and
Larry Hafelfinger of Sacramento;
stepdaughter Bonnie Youngman of
Grass Valley; 11 grandchildren,
and nine great-grandchildren.
No funeral is planned; arrangements were handied by Hooper &
Weaver Morwary. The family

Sewage spills reported i in
Nevada City,
Grass Valley and Nevada City
have experienced sewage spills the
past two days.
Nevada City’s second sewage
spill of the new year occurred this
morning on LindJcy Avenue.
The spill — caused by grease
blocking a 4-inch line — was
discovered at approximatcly 9:15
a.m. and was stopped by 9:45, said
Nevada City Public Works Director
George Hill.
“*None went into Deer Creek and
I would say it was a very minor
spill,"’ Hill said. He estimated 30
gallons of sewage escaped.
Hill said the spill was reported to
the Nevada County Environmental
Health Department and the
California Regional Water Quality
Control Board.

Carpenter; arrested at 1:40 a.m. on
Highway 20 on a $10,000 Sacramento
of Grass Valley, is suspected of being the driver of a pickup truck that
was involved in the disabling of
one sheriffs patrol car and the
damaging of another in a late Sunday morning altercation.
According to preliminary reports,
one sheriff's unit began pursuing
the pickup southbound on Highway
49 from Alta Sierra Drive after it
failed to heed a request to pull over.
The fleeing pickup went west on
Lime Kiln Road where it became
involved in a collision with the
pursuing patrol car. A closely following second patrol car then hit
the first sheriffs unit, but kept up
the pursuit
The report said the pickup then
backed into the front of the second
unit, causing more damage. The
second unit continued the pursuit
for another half mile unui] it quit

The city is contesting the fine at a
Feb. 23 hearing in Sacramento.
A sewer spill Monday morming
in Grass Valley released a
‘negligible amount’’ of raw
sewage onto Walsh Street, said
Nevada County Health Official
Jerry Zarricllo.
The spill was discovered at 10
am. and fixed in 20 minutes, said
Dr. Zarricllo. He said the spill was
caused cither by a blocked line or
disintegration of the sewer line.
'*The spill poses no risk to public
health,"" Dr. Zarricllo said. Although the spill occurred Monday
moming, Dr. Zarnello said he was
not noufied until today.
Crosswhite, 78, of Nevada City
who died Tuesday in a local medical facility.
Daughter of the late John and
Lena Buchanan, Mrs. Crosswhite
was born July 2, 1911, in Kansas.
She and her husband. moved to
Nevada ‘City three years ago from
Turlock where th¢y owned an
operated a farm.
Mrs. Crosswhite is survived by
her husband Percy.
Arthur Lowen
A funeral for Artur Lowen has
been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Russ Monroe Village
Chapel, 7960 Winding Way, Fair
Oaks.
Mr. Lowen, 75, a resident of
rural Grass Valley, died Saturday.
He was the son of the late George
and Maric Lowen, bom Nov. 26,
1914, in Canada.
He is survived by his wife, June;
daughters Sandra and Diane of
Utah, and son Ken of San Jose.
