SATURDAY, SEPT. 25, 1836.
SWIfT ON LABOR;
___ John F. Swift, in his San Francisco speech defined himself on
labor. ‘‘Labor,’’ said .the next
Governor, ‘‘is the poor man’s.
wealth ; it is all he has, and of ull
human possessions it is the most
fleeting and evanescent, for it deserts him in sickness and shrinks
@way to another and leaves him
“helpless in old age. The higher,
wages that labor can possibly ob’. tain, so long as it does not defeat
its own purpose by checking production, is not only a good thing
for the laborer as an individual,
but for the entire community, for
when the laboring man ‘is community as a wholeis contented and
is sure to be prosperous; and ol
all methods of di-tributing wealth,
‘high-wages gives the greatest yood
to the greatest number and produces the least disturbance to capital and production. It is grossly
absurd to ussume that because lubor strikes are sometimes com“menced upon insufficient reasons
they are always wrong, and
it is equally absurd and unjust to
say that because miscreants sometimes take advantage of such
strikes to precipitate a calamity
and bring on bloodshed and havoc
therefore all Jabor organizations
should disband and giye up the
struggle. I know by actual experience whut manual labor is, for
in my life have done my shure
of it; and I have not forgotten
what I then thought of the rights
of labor, and have not changed
my vpinions on that subject since
the time when, forty yeurs ago, I
was earning my living at $8 u
month.’”’ Mr. Swift is truly the
p2ople’s candidate. He rose from
the ranks of the laborers, but hus
not risen above an appreciation
and respect for their rights and
necessities. . He will be elected
_ this Fall by such a majority as no
other aspirant for the Govern. rship of California has received.

MISTAKEN M’'SNORTER.
McSnorler of the Democrat is
nothing if not persistent, eyen
when it comes: to sticking to a lie
that he hustold. He asserted the
other day that the hydraulic mines
were running on a certain date
lately; and although promptly notified by anti-slickens spies who
' mistaken, he continues to reiterate the charge. He says: ‘Will
Messrs. Benson, Hoffman and
McPhetridge tell us whut mines
are doing the mishief? We have
never yet felt called upon to question Mr. Benson’s lionest purposes,
but we know the mines that can
get water (and the Eureka Lake
is one of them) are now running,
. andi a disposition on his part to
cover up that fact is not calculated
to inspire confidence in his statements. We affirm that, though
mostof the mines are now shut
down for lack of water, there are a
number of them stil! ranning and
that the mines near Columbia Hill
are among that number. We also
about what is going on at Columbia Hill, with our source of. information, as Benson & Co. can by
playing (billiards) in Nevada
City. We will from time to time
give the public all the proof that is
needed that the mines having
plenty of water and plenty of pay
gravel can mine any time they
wish, and the Appeal and Billy
Benson shall not prevent the truth
from coming out.”
McSnorter is making a fool of
himself about this thing. He is
ng to keep up his reputation as
a ‘holy terror” by punching away
with all his might and main at a
man of straw. He should binu
ame ice on his massive brow and
‘a Grass Valley lemonade once
an hour till be regains his equanimity.
Reppy will probably stand Pat .
on the Mayoralty proposition.

Serious Danger
Threatens every man, woman or
child living in w region of country
where fever and ague ix prevalent,
since the germs of mualurial di-ease
ure inhuled from the uir and are
swallowed from the water of such
aregion. Medivinal safeguard is
abso'utely necessary to nulli-y this
danger. As a means of fortitying
and acclimating the system +o as
tohe able to resist the: walariul
poison, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is invompu.rably the best and
the most popular. Irreyzularities
of the stomach, liver and bowels
encourage malaria; but these ure
ose rectified ty the Bitters.
The functions of digestion and searetion ure assisted by its use, and
a vigorous us well as regular eondition of tte system promoted by
it. Constitution and physique are
thus defended against the inroads
of malaria by this matchless preventive, which is also a certain
and thorough remedy in the worst
cases of intermittent and remitteut
fevers.
