Calendar unveiled at GV reception
An 1892-1992 Nevada County
collector's calendar published by
the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation was introduced at
a Sept. 27 reception in Grass Valley.
The calendar is the second in a
series of historical calendars
published by the Sierra Nevada
Memorial Hospital Foundation as.
part of its fund-raising efforts for
the Hospital Endowment Fund.
The 10-inch by 13-inch,
black-and-white calendar, which is
dedicated to the memory of~Downey Clinch~and “his lifelong
interest in Nevada County, features
four pages of county history for
1892 and well-placed historical
anecdotes throughout compiled and
written by author/historian Juanita
Kennedy Browne.--= baa ay
The calendar also features 13
9-inch by ll-inch sketches by
George Mathis, known as ‘‘the
pictorial historian of the Mother
Lode.’’ The sketches were donated
by the Mathises.
Carol and Jean Mathis, daughter
and widow of George Mathis,
issued certificates of authenticity to
reception guests for the calendar art
as well as other George Mathis art
that guests brought with them, including Mathis sketches featured in
the Alpha calendar produced during
the 1950s and ‘60s in Nevada
County.
The Mathises, both artists in their
own right, took orders to watercolor.
a limited number of the 1892-1992
calendar covers. Half of the proceeds will benefit the Hospital
Foundation.

of the Rough and Ready Hotel,
framed by Rogers Framing in
Nevada City, as a reception door
prize with a value of $600. The

Ralph Fetterly
A memorial service will be conducted Oct. 13 for noted theaterscene designer and educator Ralph
William Fetterly Jr., who died
Monday in his Nevada City home.
He was 53.
__Mr. Fetterly was born July 20,
1938, in Oakland to the late Eola
Fetterly and Ralph William Fetterly
Sr. He received bachelor and
master of arts degrees from San
Jose State University. Mr. Fetterly
worked as an assistant professor of
theater at the State University of
New York in Buffalo from 1971 to
1977, He worked with the Studio _
Arena Theatre in Buffalo during the
same period, and later was a visiting designer at the College of
Marin. He did free-lance design
work for the Magic Theatre in San
Francisco.
In_1977, he and_his wife Diane

24 at her home in Nevada City,
Mrs. Florian was born July 25,
1917, in Wissington, S.D., to Harry
and Grace House. She came to
California in the 1930s and setded
in Oceanside in San Diego County,
She owned her own business there
in the 1940s and 1950s, and was
active in community affairs, In the.
late 1950s, she moved to Northern
Califomia, where she lived in Sacramento, Santa Cruz and Nevada
City. She was a member of the
Nevada City Lady Elks No. 518.
