Calf Roping—

Rules for event: Each contestant allowed two ropes on one calf.
R. C. A. rules to govern each contestant in calf roping.
Of all the rodeo events today, calf roping is probably the one in which a very useful cowboy
skill is involved. In the cow country sections of our nation a good ranch hand employs his roping
ability probably to a greaterextent than any other skill which he may possess.
Important as it is no one seems to know for certain just where or when calf roping originated. It is safe to assume, however, that it star ted in the great cattle ranges of the southw est or
even down in Old Mexico. The Mexicans were for years the masters of “hard twist rope.’
But the man is but half the team. The horses in this event have been bred up to what is
known as the famous “Quarter Horse.” These animals have the particular ability to start from a
standstill and run a hundred yards in better time than any other breed of horse.
At the same time, the cowpony lacks the extreme nervousness of the thoroughbred race
horse; they are larger of bone and can stop and turn faster in a shorter space; and their legs
can stand the gaff. To the lover of horses, there’s nothing more beautiful than a welltrained
roping horse.
It takes months, even years of careful, cautious training to make a finished calf roping
horse. Yet this training can all be undone in one short day by someone who isn’t a master horseDe: Take notice today, if you will, of the very careful handling that these horses receive in
the arena.
